What voices are you hearing, which voices are you listening to? Year 4 Day 126

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 126

“The spirit is a still small voice, and the masters of vulgarity use loudspeakers. The voice has been stifled, and many of us have lost faith in the possibility of a new perceptiveness.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg. 23)

“And after the earthquake a fire and not in the fire was Adonai, and after the fire, a still small voice” (1Kings 19:12). This is the description of how Elijah heard the voice of God in his despair over being hunted and not heard by the Israelite people. His warnings and his call to return to God had gone pretty much unheeded and, in his running for his life, he was overwhelmed by “the still small voice”. Rabbi Heschel’s words above bring this experience to mind for many of us. Herein, of course, is the problem. How do we mature and nurture our spiritual life in such a manner to be able to hear “a still small voice” within us when the PAGANS are blowing out the speakers and amplifiers to spread their false gospels? This is the challenge for a person of faith, be it in themselves, their higher consciousness, in a power greater than themselves, whatever one has faith in; it is difficult to hear what one’s inner voice is saying when Trump is blaring his bullshit, when Cain-White is spreading her lies, when people in the Pews complain about the ‘liberal sermons’ of Priests and Ministers who are just quoting the Gospels and repeating Jesus’ words, when some Jews misread the Bible or take sentences, phrases out of context to prove their ‘righteousness’ though they transgress!

This is the challenge that has been before us since humankind came into existence! Hearing “a still small voice” that is either within us or within another human being is the first step and only the first step. It takes, as I said, a spiritual maturity and a willingness to learn the difference between what one’s soul/intuition/gut instinct is saying and the loving desire to engage in self-deception. “The masters of vulgarity” have PhD’s in self-deception and the deception of another(s) and perpetrate their lies and ‘slight of hand tricks’ onto all they meet. When they are in power, they keep people enthralled with their lies and are so good, they convince people to go against what they know to be true so the people can follow the PAGAN to hell and to ruination. History gives us the testimony of the witnesses to this truth from the Assyrians to Pharaoh, from the two Kingdoms of Judea and Israel to the fall of Greece and Rome, from Germany to America today, the PAGAN liars seem to convene enough of a plurality to gain power and then seize control of everything that could stop them like the courts, the press, the freedom to assemble, the freedom of speech to disagree, with the freedom to worship being next with ‘christian nationalistic’ prayers coming to the school near you, etc. It takes a minute to collect oneself and to be able to discern what is truth and what is bullshit, what is real and what is deception, what does our soul know and what rationalizations are we buying into so we are not ostracized and persecuted? All of these discernments are dependent upon our ability to hear the “still small voice” within us and within another human being. They are dependent upon our commitment to grow our spiritual life so we are able to Shema; to listen, hear and understand what “the still small voice” is saying.

The next step for We the People who desire to grow our spirits, who are compelled to hear the “still small voice” within each of us, is to then follow the call of “the still small voice” and not ignore it, not dismiss it, not seek the expedient rather than the demand of “the still small voice”. We are witnessing the “masters of vulgarity” scream and yell, scam and con, grift and steal what is the most precious ‘gift’ that humankind can obtain: Freedom! While a plurality of people elected Trump, gave permission to implement Project 2025, and a smaller plurality still support this bullshit, We the People need to hear, listen and understand that “the still small voice” within us, that is in the universe is calling out to us. These PAGANS who are claiming to represent ‘Jesus’ are promoting the worst idolatry possible, these PAGANS who are claiming to be ‘living a torah life’ are acting out the greatest sin; Avodah Zarah, IDOL WORSHIP. All of this talk about Bibi and Trump, about Trump’s Jewish Grandchildren, about Trump being ‘good for the Jews’, being a ‘great christian’ is just utter and complete POPPYCOCK. And this is what is blaring from the loudspeakers and assaulting our ears, confusing our minds and trying to silence “the still small voice” within us.

This is the greatest challenge facing We the People; growing our spiritual life through a regimen of spiritual practices-whatever works for you, the individual, and then have these principles infuse your daily living, no matter what vulgarities are blasting through the loudspeakers, or as we say in AA, ,no matter what KFUCK Radio is blaring in your head. We all need to have a discipline because the lies, the deceptions by another(s), our own self-deceptions and unhealthy desires are loud, proud and strong. We have seen many a person, many a community, many a country brought down because of their hubris and belief they didn’t need to engage in a spiritual practice. In the world of recovery, we say we are sober one day at a time based on our spiritual condition. We the People are free one day at a time based on our spiritual condition. Remember the descendants of Jacob willingly went into slavery though they were “more mighty and numerous than we” according to the Bible. Just as addiction is a “cunning, baffling, disease”, so too is self-deception and the power of “the masters of vulgarity”, speaking  through “loudspeakers”. Yet, though “sin couches at your door… you can master it” we learn in Genesis 4:7. The question we all need to face is will we “master it” by using the spiritual strength of “the still small voice” within us.

I know this voice well, it constantly harangues me when I am screwing up and/or thinking of screwing up. This has been true since my youth and I fought against it from so many years, I am saddened to say. I realize that in my ‘previous life’ I was one of the “masters of vulgarity” and I am deeply remorseful for my actions. In my recovery, looking backwards through this lens, I see where I allowed some “masters of vulgarity” who were disguised as compatriots in hearing and acting on “the still small voice” to infiltrate my thinking and this led to not good results. Hindsight is 20/20 and my T’Shuvah for these errors is to continue to grow my spiritual life, to hear clearer, to discern better and to root out my deception receptors that keep me buying the bullshit and lies of another. Each day, through this writing, through practicing the principles of decency, justice, kindness, love, compassion, and truth I grow one grain of sand more in hearing and following the “still small voice” within. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

"Sensitive to God's demands" or sensitive to your own? Year 4 Day 125

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 125

“Upon the grave of the specious we encounter the valid. Much grave digging had to be done. The most fatal trap into which religious thinking may fall is the equation of faith with expediency. The genuine task of our traditions is to educate a sense for the expedient, a sensitivity to God’s demand.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg.22)

In an age where the “specious” has become the norm, where the lie is so accepted that truth has lost all meaning, it is incumbent upon all of us to start to bury “the specious” in our daily living. Rabbi Heschel is imploring us to dig deep graves for “the specious” as he experienced first-hand the destruction that comes from not burying it, from engaging with it, from selling it to the masses, and from the myriad of graves never dug for decent, good people. He is harkening us to remember the manipulation of decency for the sake of power, the twisting of what is moral for the sake of scapegoating entire groups of people who were ‘not like us’, and the grift that went along with the supposed ‘taking our proper place of power’ that happened in Germany in the 1930’s. None of these “specious” arguments were valid, yet people believed them, went along with them, joined with them for their own safety?, for their own power?, for their own joy of prejudice and hatred??? How many more graves do we have to dig? When a power is rising that wants authority over all, when an autocrat engages in disrupting free and fair elections in a foreign country and one of the parties running is encouraging, soliciting, and welcoming this engagement, when the autocrat running for office in the US is telling us that he wants to be dictator and now is following through on his promise, when an outbreak of measles is killing people when it could be prevented as it has been for years, are we seeing enough graves to bury “the specious?

It seems as if the second sentence applies to all of us here. While Rabbi Heschel writes this sentence in the past tense, he is acutely aware that this is a task that needs constant vigilance and constant digging. We are seeing this need in full bloom in this moment where an autocrat who cares for nothing other than his own power and image is willing to make ‘deals with the devil’ so he can prevail, so he and his cronies can become wealthier and wealthier, on the backs and to the detriment of the majority of the people who, foolishly in my opinion, voted him back into office. He makes these grand proclamations and then follows them up with NOTHING. He is so proud of himself for making a ‘deal’ with China when he caused chaos and disruption to the people who depend on foreign trade the most, the small businesspeople. Rather than care for them, he made deals for the wealthy so they would not be hurt, he let people who he is transactional with and may need in the future know what he was going to do so they could make more money, and he fucked everyone else. This is “the specious” we all need to bury, this way of being has to be buried deeper and deeper because it keeps coming back to harm us, to harm our neighbors, to harm the stranger we are told to love, to harm the widows, the orphans, the poor and the needy whom Jesus loves and whom God cares for deeply according to the New Testament and the Bible. Do you have your shovels at the ready? Are you willing to bury your own “specious” ways? Lets start digging the graves for “the specious” we are being bombarded with today!

In the writing above, Rabbi Heschel is using “expediency” and “specious” to denote the terrible and horrific ways we have fallen into disrepute as human beings. Because we are so willing to go along with both the “specious” which means “plausible, but wrong” and the “expedient” which means “a means of attaining an end that is convenient but improper and immoral”. We the People have to demand of our Clergy that they cease and desist in their praise of the “specious” and the “expedient” because neither one leads us to Godliness, to Holiness, to Decency, to Doing the Next Right Thing! They lead us to cut the corners of the field that is supposed to be left for the poor, they lead us to make fun of people who have disabilities because we can. Both “expediency” and “specious” give us ‘permission’ to mistreat the stranger under the guise of ‘protecting our citizens’, they give us the ‘go ahead’ to treat women as 2nd Class citizens and put them in their place which is not in leadership! They allow us feed the most negative parts of ourselves by indulging in our prejudices, our biases, and rather than “righteousness, righteousness, you shall pursue” we see Grift, Lies, Power is the best pursuit! AND SOME CLERGY ARE PROMOTING THIS BULLSHIT!!

This is the “most unkindest cut of all”! That Clergy, people who purport to be engaged in doing “God’s Will” support and promote both “expediency” and “specious” arguments is appalling and disgusting. It is the worst of human nature and, in my opinion, breaking all of the last 5 of the 10 Commandments which these PAGANS want displayed in Courts, Schools, all over. It is a joke to think they want to let everyone know which Commandments they are breaking and believing that We the People are too stupid to notice. That the people in whom we are to have the utmost trust are nothing more than panhandlers, thief’s, scammers and cons is, ultimately, the greatest desecration of God’s name one can imagine. We the People have to say NO to these idolators, NO to the autocrats trying to enslave all of us in a nice warm manner, NO to the “specious” and “expedient” tendencies within us and YES to the fundamental moral behaviors that are in our souls, YES to the call and demands of the Universe to “do justly, love mercy” and respect and embrace the infinite worth and dignity of each and every soul. This is our job, this is our choice, this is our gift and this is our honor to live into the basic goodness of being that is, unfortunately, buried deep within some of us and it is incumbent upon We the People to bring it out in ourselves and in another(s).

I have spent the past 38+ years burying the “specious” and the “expedient” and each time I fail to do this, each time I give into these ways of being, I FUCK IT UP! Writing this morning has made all of my screw ups flash in front of me, which happens every day, and I see that at the core of these errors is “specious” and “expediency”, sometimes as a choice and most times unwittingly. This is the work Rabbi Heschel is speaking of, burying these two ways of being so deep, it is almost impossible for them to influence me so strongly again. I am sorry for my succumbing to them. My commitment is to see choices I make through this lens, is it “expedient”, “specious” and if so, walk away. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Burying your lies and unearthing the Truth - Year 4 Day 124

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 124

“God had to bury truth in order to create man. How does one ever encounter the truth? The truth is underground, hidden from the eye. Its nature and man’s condition are such that he can neither produce nor invent it. However, there is a way. If you bury the lies, truth will spring up.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg. 22)

Living in Trump’s “alternative facts” universe is the proof that “he can neither produce nor invent” truth. We are incapable of doing this, yet people throughout the millennia have tried and failed, leading to the wreck and ruin of civilizations, human beings, and progress. Think of the myriad of peoples, ideas and progressive ways of being that were shut down by being conquered by the Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, etc. All of these conquerers believed that ‘might makes right’ and denied the truth of Zechariah’s prophecy: “not by might, not by power, but by My spirit”. Of course they also denied the “truth” of monotheism with their pantheon of gods and the stories about them.

It is a problem that has dogged humanity through today-“how can I make my lies into someone else’s truth” is a question that was most prevalent for Josef Goebbels so he set out to do exactly this. He was not the first nor the last and he was, however, one of the best  and his example has been followed and honed ever since. “Accuse another of that which you are guilty of” was his phrase and, as we can see with Trump, Vance, Hegseth, Vought, and especially Miller, this way of being is the modus operandi for the current administration and the chaos this brings is celebrated and enjoyed by these wannabe despots. While it is easy and important to point out the evil being perpetrated upon all of us by these grifters and deceivers, it is as important for all of us to look at how we try to “invent” the truth. Be it by denying things in our past, by refusing to make amends, by blaming another for that which we are guilty of, and so many other “truths” we attempt to “invent”. It is important, as we have only 19 days till Shavuot, 19 days until we receive “Truth” and commit to live in it, so it is a good idea to let go of the ‘truths we have invented’ and, like we did during Passover, get down to our basic truth of being human, of being a divine need and reminder. It is important to return to our position as being a partner with the universe, the Ineffable One, to finish creating a world where the practice of “freedom throughout the land and to all its inhabitants therein is lived into by everyone. It is crucial that we return to the “Truth” that the Torah brings to us, as I have said before, the Torah, the Bible, are books of eternal truth and wisdom, whether one wants to believe the stories actually happened or are told as examples.

My focus, however, is “there is a way. If you bury the lies, truth will spring up.” Since my recovery began, I have spent parts of each day looking at the lies I tell myself. I found it to be crucial to living well to jettison the lies I lived by for so long and to be careful about the ones I was making up, both wittingly and unwittingly. Human beings tell themselves lies all the time in order to cope with the realities of living. To overcome the dread and despair that we all will die, eventually, we deny that we are going to die today so we can carry on otherwise, we would either stay in bed or be so reckless we would take chances and risks that could kill us. This is a ‘good’ lie,  one that motivates us to live today. What Rabbi Heschel is speaking of, of course, are the insidious lies that human beings tell themselves. The lies of Goebbels and Trump, Vought and Eichmann, the lies that one human being by the ‘luck’ of their race is better than another human being of another race, that skin color determines worth, that Jews are inferior to Christians, Jews killed Christ, that God only loves ___(fill in the blank), that the wealthy and powerful actually know better and should be worshipped, and so many other bullshit stories that have been told and believed. Isn’t it time for all of us to let go of these lies, to stop believing the MAGA bullshit, the Aryan bullshit, the Putin/Orban bullshit?

Isn’t it time for We the People to build on what the Church as done by investing Pope Leo XIV? Isn’t it time for We the People to build on Rabbi Heschel’s teachings above, on the teachings of Buber, Rav Kook, the Baal Shem, the Ramban, and so many other Jewish philosophers through the ages? Isn’t it time for We the People to embrace the power of the upcoming holiday of Shavuot and invest ourselves seriously in the Tikkun L’Eil Shavuot, the repairing/fixing/rectifying ourselves before the evening before Shavuot. While it is usually done on the evening of Shavuot(remember Jewish days begin in the evening), it is something that the teaching above reminds us is important to do everyday. We will never be able to hear, read, see, live into “TRUTH” without first rectifying the lies we tell ourselves. We will never be able to receive Torah, receive Truth without first letting go of the lies we are telling ourselves. It took 49 days and a lot of complaining and getting clean for the former slaves to be able to receive Torah and what was their response: “we will do and then we will understand”, realizing that trying to discern what the meaning of a mitzvah is prior to engaging in it is impossible. This may be the biggest lie we tell ourselves: we have to understand something before we can do it. How ridiculous, can you truly explain to me the experience of watching a sunset, of being on the Ocean, of climbing the top of the mountain, of running a marathon, of love prior to engaging in it? OF COURSE NOT! Yet, we are willing to believe the lies we tell ourselves, we are willing to give our power over to Trump, Vought, Miller because we are buying into their lies and we have been willing to discriminate against another so we can feel better about ourselves. We will never be able to receive Torah, to live into the Biblical Wisdom while clothed in these and so many other Lies We Tell Ourselves!

I don’t understand the workings of the internet nor the computer I am writing on, so I just engage with them and what I need happens-this is not magic, it is seeking truth, seeking wisdom, seeking the humility to know I can never “know” everything nor do I need to. I do understand love because I engage in it, I do understand lies because I lived so many for so long and they brought  ruin to me and all around me. I do understand the power of truth, of T’Shuvah because I have engaged in them both for the past 38 years and found joy, passion and purpose. I know the power of the lies we tell about another in order to feel good about ourselves. I know the power of denying the opportunity for T’Shuvah while wrapping oneself in the garments of God, of ‘righteousness’, of doing good. I know the bullshit of the lies and everyday work to rid myself of the ones that are harming me and you. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

What is your relationship to/with "Truth"- is it your way to speak it or ignore it when inconvenient? Year 4 Day 123

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 123

“God had to bury truth in order to create man. How does one ever encounter the truth? The truth is underground, hidden from the eye. Its nature and man’s condition are such that he can neither produce nor invent it. However, there is a way. If you bury the lies, truth will spring up.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg. 22)

The first sentence above refers to a Midrash that talks about the ‘war’ that ‘raged in heaven’ between the Angels who wanted humans created and those that didn’t who all made their ‘case’ to God. The Angel of Truth was the most vehement against creating humanity because the Angel knew that humans would lie and bastardize the truth. So, the Midrash goes on to say that God buried “truth” in the one place humans would ‘never’ look-in their inner life, in their soul. This midrash speaks to the high value the Rabbis, the spiritual world places on “truth” and the reality that humans have, throughout the millennia, spat on “truth”, bastardized “truth”, misused “truth” and, most of all, ignored “truth” whenever “truth” becomes inconvenient to feed their greed and their avarice.

This problem, of how human beings can stand for, with, and in “truth” especially when in becomes inconvenient has been with us forever. We see this in the stories of Sarah and Hagar, of Jacob and Esau, of Rebekah and Isaac, in stories throughout the entire Bible. Rather than learn from their errors, the Rabbis, the leaders of the Church have canonized these stories and turned them into ‘good things’, lying to one’s husband becomes for the ‘sake of heaven’, abusing someone who did as you asked, bore a son for your husband, becomes ‘righteous’, tricking one’s brother and never reconciling with him is seen as a good, smart move-all leading to the lies that help to separate us one from another today. Maybe this is the reason that the fundamentalist practitioners of the different faiths have embraced the LIAR in Chief, Donald Trump, and his band of thieves, liars, and practitioners of visiting evil and cruelty upon human beings just because they can.

From Adam to King David and beyond in Jewish history, we have been stymied by our refusal to “encounter the truth”. Nathan the prophet, upon hearing King David’s outrage at the story he was telling him, pointed his finger at David and accused him of being the demon of the story. David immediately agreed and sought to reconnect with God. The Second Temple was destroyed because, according to the Rabbis, of senseless hatred amongst the Jews of the time. This senseless hatred has continued to this day and it hinders our ability to “encounter the truth”.

Senseless hatred is used as a political tool and no one has done more with it than the Republicans and Trump. These ‘good christian folk’ keep lying and lying, bastardizing the “truth” of Jesus’ teachings and the moral foundations of Christianity and calling everyone else liars, grifters, etc. They are following the Goebbels teaching:”accuse another of that which you are guilty of” to a whole new level. They are masters at this, Trump sells these lies like hotcakes, he is a great salesman to people who want to be deceived and lied to. We are in a time where self-deception is at an all time high, I think. We the People seem to have made a choice to stay willfully blind, to violate the “Holiness Code” found in  Leviticus 19:1-18 with reckless abandon. Rather than “honor your mother and father”, children are “divorcing” them, cutting them off and out. Rather than leave the corners of the fields for the poor, people are harvesting every inch, rather than rebuking someone when they are doing wrong, people are lauding Trump’s every act of sin, every act which makes fun of another, blames another, degrades another human being. Rather than pay a worker his wages every day, employers seek to find ways to exploit their workers, putting stumbling blocks up for the blind and cursing the deaf are everyday occurrences rather than NOT doing either of these actions. Suspect your neighbor is the way of the world instead of Love Your Neighbor in today’s world. This is the tragedy and trauma we are living in today, all because of our aversion to “truth”. All because we are unwilling to, feel incapable to “encounter the truth” each and every day.

Human hubris contributes greatly to our unwillingness and inability to “encounter the truth”, I believe. As the next sentence above says, “he can neither produce nor invent it” and this is too much for most humans to bear. We the People have to come to terms with our own limitations, with our own dependency upon our “intuitive mind”, our need to live in higher consciousness each and every day. We the People are being called by the writing today to reprioritize our thinking and our relationship with “truth”. We the People are being reminded that we are not as all-powerful and all-knowing as we think we are. We the People are being called to account in the words above for our hubris, for our using our rational mind to deny what “truth” is, to lie about the need and call of every human soul to live into “truth”, to enslave people with the lies and the subterfuge our elected officials are using to usurp the Constitution, to destroy the underpinnings of our democracy, to set up their new “1000 year fourth Reich” as some of Trump’s advisors, cronies are calling it. We the People know where this type of talk leads, We the Jewish People know what living under ‘christian nationalism’ is like and how demeaning, how dangerous it is for Jews, Muslims, etc. Yet, jews, muslims, christians, even some catholics, all are embracing Project 2025, loving what Netanyahu is doing in Gaza and the West Bank, believing that ‘might makes right’ even though the prophet Zechariah says: “Not by might, not by power, but by My spirit…”(Zechariah 4:6). I just keep wondering what Bible these ‘good religious folk’ are reading-certainly not the Hebrew Bible nor the New Testament of Jesus’.

I am hyper aware of the subtle lies that swirl around in my head and from the mouths of another. Because I was a liar and a con, I am ultra-sensitive to them upon hearing them, perceiving them and I erupt like a volcano when people spout them. I can’t stand what passes for spiritual sustenance today, how Rabbis and Preachers, Priests and Ministers are willing to give comfort the comfortable and afflicted the afflicted with their words of encouragement rather than afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted. In sermon after sermon, it seems the majority of clergy are content to ‘not rock the boat’ for fear of… FUCK FEAR! Speaking “Truth” is our only job, as clergy and as human beings. Silent acquiescence is the path to slavery and destruction-we have been there before. “Truth” no matter what is our path! God Bless sand stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Is your "spiritual guide" helping you hear "the Voice" or helping you hear their voice? Year 4 Day 122

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 122

“Tragic is the role of religion in contemporary society. The world is waiting to hear the Voice, and those who are called upon to utter the word are confused and weak in faith. “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty” (Psalm 29:4). Where is its power? Where is its majesty?” (Insecurity of Freedom pg. 21)

“The Voice” is calling out from Mt. Sinai every hour of every day. We know this, not because it is part of the Midrash of Judaism, we know this because those of us who are attuned to the frequency of “the Voice” hear it daily. There is a lot of static at times because we humans have to be empty of our false egos, our self-deceptions to hear “the Voice” clearly, and even though it is static at times, we know it is “the Voice” that spoke to our ancestors at Sinai. The issue raised above is with the Clergy, once again. Since the days of the Talmud, of the Rabbis, the prophets have been used to prove the points they wanted to make, they have not been studied for the words and warnings they offered. The prophets heard “the Voice” and relayed it to the people, the royalty, the priests and the wealthy and guess what? They did not want to hear them nor did they heed them and Israel was lost and wandering for almost 1900 years. Jews have been persecuted and discriminated against for these 1900 years and scapegoated for all of the ills of the times since the times of Jesus till today. Yet, the Rabbis were more worried about their position, about the Judaism they were re-inventing, and felt the prophets would cause people to revolt against Rome and make Judaism disappear altogether. BULLSHIT!

Just as the Rabbis were “confused and weak in faith”, so too have the Clergy of all faiths been. In the Bible, we are told how to live together, each group keeping their own ways and not treading on the ways of another, making Biblical paths so attractive that more and more people would adopt an ethical and moral foundation for living within their own community and with other peoples. Yet, because of competition, because of the need for power and the greediness of human beings, even the Priests, the Ministers, the Cardinals, the Bishops, the Rabbis, the Imams became seduced by the power of royalty and riches and confused their agendas and the agendas of their ‘benefactors’ with the agenda of God, the agenda of the Bible. This has caused “confusion” since the beginning and this “confusion” has made the Clergy of all faiths “weak in faith” until today!

We the People have to stop telling our Priests, Rabbis, and Imams what we want and demand of them to teach us all how to “hear the Voice” and how to put into action We the People demanding to know the logic behind the commandment, the action, it is time for our Clergy to stand up and remind us of the words We the People spoke at Mount Sinai: Na’Aseh V’Nishma, we will do and then we will understand. We the People have to demand of our clergy to stop listening to us, to stop worrying about keeping their job and call out to us and demand from us what “the Voice” tells us all each day from the top of Mount Sinai: “Love your Neighbor as Yourself”, “humanity is created in the Image of God, male and female both were created at the same time”, Love the stranger because you were strangers in the Land of Egypt”, “care for the needy, the poor, the widow and the orphan”, “do justly, love mercy, walk in the ways of God”, etc. Yet, the Clergy today are too interested in lining their own pockets like Paula Cain-White, Joel Osteen and the rest of the “prosperity gospels” LIARS and PAGANS!

Of course “the voice of the Lord is powerful”, “the voice of the Lord is full of majesty”, the questions Rabbi Heschel is asking is not because he doesn’t know it is because We the People have forgotten to hear the power and the majesty that “the voice of the Lord” bestows upon us. “The word is very near to you, in your mouth, in your heart that you may do it…I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse, CHOOSE LIFE.” (Deut. 30:11,19). It is the JOB of the Clergy to help us clear out the shmutz in our brains, the chatter of K-Fuck radio that is constantly playing in our heads and the confusion of our immature souls and inner life so We the People will hear what is truly in our mouth and in our souls, in our hearts and take the actions that promote our lives and the lives of those around us. It is incumbent on the Clergy to impart Good Orderly Direction to all of us, as we say in Alcoholics Anonymous. Yet, the PAGANS running some of the biggest Churches in the land are doing the opposite, some of the best-meaning Rabbis, Priests, Imams, are too afraid given the power-mad lay people who run some of the religious institutions in our country and across the globe. Even worse are the Rabbis and Jews like Ben G’vir, Smotrich, Netanyahu, who know better and bastardize the Bible for their own power, greed, wealth and narcissistic endeavors. The Rabbis who give Trump, Israel, Putin, Orban cover are the worst PAGANS of all because We the Jewish People were given the job of promoting “the majesty”, “the power” of “the VOICE” to the entire world and instead assholes like those mentioned above are promoting their voices and selling us on following in their idolatrous footsteps instead of listening to “the Voice” that is “in our mouths, in our hearts”.

I know “the Voice” when I hear it precisely because I ignored it for so many years during my ‘run’ of alcoholism, criminality, and loneliness. Because I felt so abandoned and alone, because I “wanted mine”, I wanted to “get even” for what I perceived society had done to me and my family with the death of my father, I blotted out “the Voice” and, at the same time, I kept being a part of the Shul I was raised at, I was the President of the Youth Group, I went to services, etc, so part of me knew “the Voice” was calling me and I, like Jonah, ran away. Once I had my “spiritual awakening” and began to study, I couldn’t stop hearing “the Voice” and the “power” and the “majesty” of it is too overwhelming for me to ignore and too motivating for me not to follow. This is the crux of my strength and my vulnerability; I can’t not hear “the Voice”, I can’t not share “the Voice”, I can’t stay silent and do the ‘expected’ and ‘expedient’ thing, I can’t listen to the people who believe the golden rule is: “the one with the gold rules”, and I have never been ‘politically correct’ in my life. As soon as I hear “the Voice”, I have to follow it, I have to share it, I have to stand in it, on it and wave it like a banner. I am compelled and, as a descendant of the prophets like we all are, I have little patience for the bullshit of those who want to promote LIES, alternative facts, and their own bullshit-calling it ‘god’s word’. How do you view your Religious Leadership, helping you solve your spiritual maladies ore adding to them? Year 4 Day 121

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 121

“Tragic is the role of religion in contemporary society. The world is waiting to hear the Voice, and those who are called upon to utter the word are confused and weak in faith. “The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty” (Psalm 29:4). Where is its power? Where is its majesty?” (Insecurity of Freedom pg. 21)

OY! Reading this today, knowing when these words were written and spoken for the first time is depressing. Religious leaders were warned of the impending danger of the cultish faux-religious groups sprouting and about to sprout up. By now, the National Prayer Breakfast had been started and those ‘christ is the lion’, ‘live like King David’ people were worming their way into government, foreign affairs, etc. The KKK was alive and well so ‘christ’, according to their theology, was a white supremacist, and Nixon’s lies, Falwell’s ‘moral majority’ (which was anything but moral), Gingrich, Tea Party, MAGA, Prosperity Gospels were yet to flourish, though they were beginning their climb to the ‘top of the heap’. Yet, our religious leadership, as great as they were, failed to inoculate the faithful against the hypocrisy, the idolatry, the PAGANS who were in our midst!

How could this have happened? Fear-full stop! Religious people were afraid to ‘be on the wrong side of…’, they did not support MLK and Civil Rights for a long, long time and some, especially white southerners, never have as we are witnessing a return to a Jim Crow type era. Religious leaders forgot that they serve God, they serve something greater than their paycheck and whenever they gave into to the “Board”, they lost their voices and their power-which comes from God. These Clergy people decided their livelihood was more important than serving their calling, their souls’ knowing and the greater good of humankind. How fucking sad!! It is enraging that the people who were to teach us the moral solution to the problems all humanity face, compromised themselves for the sake of a paycheck, for the sake of a job. All Pulpit Clergy should have been marching with John Lewis, Rev Martin Luther King, way before Selma and they didn’t because they didn’t want to upset the power structure of their congregations, the power structure of the white racists and they did not want to face their own inner racism. For Jews, many were happy that the Blacks were being discriminated against as the quotas on Jews in Graduate Schools had recently been lifted, the memory of Nazi Germany was fresh in their minds and, heaven forbid, they did not want to “rock the boat”!

How utterly disgusting for our Clergy to shrink in the face of their fears, of their prejudices, of their bastardizing of the moral foundation upon which every spiritual discipline stands! The more I think about what was happening, the more angry I am with what passed for ‘religious observance’. There are not enough “hail marys’, “our fathers”, “chest pounding” to redeem what We the People allowed and fostered to happen in our religious institutions. Yes, We the People are at the heart of this dangerous drama that has been playing out for the millennia since the times of antiquity, when humans were tools if they didn’t have power, since the times when the Priesthood in Ancient Israel was for sale and controlled by the King, since the times of the Prophets who railed against such behaviors, since the time of Christianity spreading hatred of the very people from whom Jesus came from, since the time of the Rabbis working hard to mitigate the rage and the abject despair of the prophets over the People’s wanton disregard for God’s pleas to return.

The tragedy we are part of today, in America, in Israel, across the Globe lies at the feet of the so-called ‘religious leaders’. These pagans, these mendacious masters, these PROSTITUTES have whored themselves and their religious institutions to suck the dick of Donald Trump and Steve Bannon, in order to get them to do what they want, believing they are in control of everything. They forget the lessons of history, they forget the experiences of the people at Mount Sinai, with everyone having their own experience of God both there and at the Red Sea, with each individual being talked to in their own way-remember the commandments are in 2nd person singular. Smotrich, Ben G’Vir, Cain-White, Osteen are merely representatives of the ROT and DECAY that has infiltrated the ‘real jews, real christians, real muslims’ as these whores call themselves.

Yet, We the People, at least 40-45% of us still believe in the Grifter-In-Chief! More than 40% of the people still applaud the charlatans who are making money off of God’s name-isn’t this the ultimate breaking of the 3rd Commandment-“Do not take the Name of the Lord in Vain!! More than 40% of the people are seeking and supporting surrendering to Russia, becoming serfs to Trump and his WhoreMongers, spewing racial hatred and antisemitism throughout the land instead of Freedom! How is this possible? It goes back to the opening sentence above, it goes back to the clergy of the time not heeding Rabbi Heschel’s words. It goes back to We the People wanting to control the clergy, have power over the word of God and the works God commands us to fulfill. It goes back to the spiritual bankruptcy that We the People were suffering from and the lack of effort on the part of the Clergy to help us identify and heal our spiritual maladies so what we have today could not happen, so what we experience today would not have been given the ‘shade’ to grow in such darkness and overwhelm the light. Where the FUCK are the CLERGY of TODAY when Rev William Barber is arrested for praying in public to JESUS??

Having been raised in the 50’s and 60’s, knowing how much I really wanted to learn more than the Hebrew Alphabet and how to read the Torah for my Bar Mitzvah, and being thwarted by the ‘established’ modes of Hebrew School, I am grateful for the first sentence above because it describes my experience at that time and, in some ways, added to my disillusionment with the world after my father’s death. Spiritual needs were relegated to lifecycle events, and, while my shul did a good job of creating community, the deeper study and solutions to the issues facing us at the time communally as well as individually, were never addressed. Fast forward to my Rabbinic studies, spiritual counseling was not high on the priority list, “see someone twice and then refer them out” was what was being said. The tragedy continues.  God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Absurdity or Responsibility, which is your default way of living in? Year 4 Day 120

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 120

“Freedom is a burden that God has thrust upon man. Freedom is something we are responsible for. If we succeed, we will help in the redemption of the world; if we fail, we may be crushed by its abuse. Freedom as man’s unlimited lordship is the climax of absurdity, and the central issue we face is man’s false sense of sovereignty.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg. 21)

While Rabbi Heschel was not the only person to recognize the inherent dangers in what was going on in the late 1950’s, he is one of the few Jews to speak out so forcefully about what the government was doing, what the people were doing, what religion was doing to enhance and retard “freedom” in America and in the world. Because “freedom” has been treated as an entitlement by so many here, the idea of being responsible for it has not always been in our DNA as human beings. The stories of slavery, of bowing down to the King, the Autocrat, etc are far more numerous than those that depict serving God, serving “freedom”, which is what makes the Bible all the more a revolutionary document!

We are in a worse state than the late 1950’s today and, as we see everyday with the great CHAOS MACHINE called Trump and his lackeys, we are in grave danger of being “crushed by its abuse”. Being a witness to this “abuse” here in America and in Israel with the Ben G’vir, Smotrich, Netanyahu mendacious PAGANS living under the guise of ‘religious’, is enraging, heartbreaking, scary and We the People cannot stop fighting for our “freedom” and the “freedom” of our neighbors, the “stranger in our midst”, etc.

The main issue facing us and the root cause of the abuse of power is, as my friend and teacher Rabbi Danny Maseng puts it: “moral foundations”. Without living from a moral foundation, one is just evil and cruel. In fact, a lack of moral foundation is the prerequisite for being able to be cruel and evil. While many people, like Trump, Heinrich, Putin, Bibi, come off as nice, fun, charismatic, they are not moral and without a moral foundation, the people in power(elected or not) have to “abuse” “freedom” and are irresponsible with our rights, our minds, our spirits. For them, cruelty is the point so we are so focused on one area that is so outrageous we don’t notice the myriad of thefts, lies, abuses happening in every other area of our government and our living.

Having lived with these words for the past 3 days, it is embarrassing for me that I did not realize what Rabbi Heschel was saying the first few times I read this, I knew and I didn’t know how prescient he was in this instance. Witnessing “freedom” being considered “man’s unlimited lordship” on both ends of the continuum, far right and far left, is what has brought us to the doorstep of ending the democratic experiment of the past 240 years, of ending the cause and the spirit of Lexington and Concord some 250 years ago. It is not only “the climax of absurdity”, it is threatening the very underpinnings of Judaism; “proclaim freedom throughout the land..”, “love the stranger”, “love your neighbor”, “one law for the stranger and the citizen alike”, and all the rest of the morality that the Bible brought to the world which these ‘good christian folk’ like Trump, Cain-White, Osteen, Bondi, and the other cross-wearing hookers Trump has around him, ‘praise god’ for. The depth and breath of their hypocrisy is astounding and dangerous.

I keep wondering what it is that keeps their supporters so loyal to their own detriment and the only reason I can come up with is the age-old responses to an autocrat: fear and “drinking the kool-aid”. I have to believe that Lindsey Graham is afraid of something he doesn’t want people to know about him because one cannot be a loyal friend to John McCain, z”l, and to Donald Trump-it is impossible. There are many other elected officials who seem to be afraid to stand for “freedom” and, in their fear, are bringing the “absurdity” of Trump to bear on all of us. The people who have “drank the kool-aid” are going to have to experience a “dark night of the soul” and have an authentic “spiritual awakening” before they will see any light, hear and experience any truth and, come back to being responsible for their “freedom”.

Now is the time, America and Israel are the places for We the People to once again, as we did at Mount Sinai, pledge our allegiance to God, not human beings. Right here, right now is the time for We the People to be “responsible” to and for the moral foundations of the Bible, of democracy, of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, and to fulfill the promises of the Declaration of Independence: “all people are created equal.. and endowed with certain unalienable rights; life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness”. These promises, along with the ones in the Bible, are not in the minds nor actions of Osteen, Cain-White, Rubio, Hegseth, Vought, Lutnick, and the rest of the thugs around Trump. Their belief in their own sovereignty is so complete they mock the process to select a Pope-these ‘good christian folk’ and supported by the ‘best catholic of them all’ J D Vance! Who else but We the People can stop these mendacious, cruel, evil people. It is our responsibility to do everything we can to “redeem the captive”, to “ransom our kin, our people” from any and all forms of imprisonment and enslavement  and NOW is the time. Be it Bibi or Donny, both of whom think they are Mafioso’s, We the People are being called to “take to the streets” in non-violent protests and to support Rev Barber and everyone else who wants to Pray in the Capitol Rotunda, especially since these assholes want prayers in school which, will not include Jewish nor Muslim prayers. Yet, these PAGANS arrest Rev Barber because he prayed for the same people God tells us to care for and Jesus hung out with-DUH!!

I am deeply committed to being responsible for freedom and know the how it helps to redeem an individual. This has been my life’s work for the past 37+ years and the gratification of being able to look in the mirror, with all my flaws, and know I have brought about the ransoming of the captive and the redeeming of a human soul fills me with humility and awe. The beauty of living the words above is that no one can take the experience away, no matter how they lie, obfuscate, and run from the truth, there is no erasing the experiences of responsibility to “freedom” and the knowing of a job well-done. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Responsibility for our freedom means being watchful and wary of the promises of the Autocrats Year 4 Day 119

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 119

“Freedom is a burden that God has thrust upon man. Freedom is something we are responsible for. If we succeed, we will help in the redemption of the world; if we fail, we may be crushed by its abuse. Freedom as man’s unlimited lordship is the climax of absurdity, and the central issue we face is man’s false sense of sovereignty.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg. 21)

The second sentence above is what many of us learned in our Civics classes. I remember my 9th Grade Civics teacher, Mr. Ed Roach, drilling into our minds and spirits that freedom depends on how responsible we are to the Constitution, the laws of the land, and the Declaration of Independence. Each Christmas Holiday, he would take a bus load of 9th graders to Washington DC to visit the sites of freedom, the halls of justice and Congress, etc so we could learn to appreciate our hard-fought for freedom and the journey our ancestors took so we could live in America. Almost 60 years later, I can hear his voice, see his face, and feel his passion for freedom and for all of us being responsible for our own and everyone else’s freedom!

Rabbi Heschel says: “In a free society, some are guilty all are responsible.” Yet, today, we are witnessing the irresponsibility of our elected officials, the blatant disregard for our Constitution and Declaration Of Independence, our democratic norms, checks and balances by a group of fascists who enjoy the cruelty, much like the Nazis who killed the Jews and then went home to be such good fathers and mothers, loving classical music, laughing and partying away! When absolute power is the goal, cruelty is just a means to the desired end and these PAGANS, operating under the guise of ‘christianity’ that has nothing to do with Christ or God, love to see the pain their cruelty inflicts on anyone and everyone. Stephen Miller, Tom Holman, J D Vance, Donald Trump, Hegseth, Noem, all have wet dreams every night over the pain, fear and horror they inflict on people-just like Himmler, Goring, Eichmann, Hitler, Goebbels, et al. These assholes are joining the autocrats club by imitating Putin, Orban, etc.

Demanding accountability is only the beginning, however. We the People must continue to take to the streets and protest against this irresponsible behavior towards our “freedoms”! We the People are being called to be responsible especially when the powers that be are not. Just as the founding fathers revolted against the authoritarian King George, so to do We the People have to revolt against the wannabe King Donald. Just as the Justice Department, with people like Andrew Weissmann, decimated the Italian Mafia, so to do We the People have to decimate and take down “Don the wannabe Mafioso”. It is not enough to wring our hands, it is not enough to make speeches, it is not enough to donate money. We the People have to put our actions where our mouth is, We the People, who are physically able, must block the doors to our institutions which protect us from the lying, idol-worshiping Republicans who are sucking “Don the wannabe Mafioso’s” you know what!! It is getting tiresome for these Pagan Republicans waving the flag as if they love America when they are really waving the white flag of surrender. It is really boring to hear of their ‘love of god’ when they only ‘love’ power and corruption. It is nauseating to hear them pontificate on their love of people and how much they care for their constituents when they won’t even show up for town hall meetings, they won’t take remedial actions for the errors they have committed by approving Hegseth, Kennedy Jr., Noem, etc. The PAGANS running both houses are incapable of “taking a thorough and fearless inventory” much less admitting their powerlessness over their addiction to ass-kissing and how it makes their life unmanageable-the first step in change, the first step in doing TShuvah.

What baffles many of us is how Trump still enjoys any support, much less 39-45% support! What are the supporters seeing that we are not? What are they staying willfully blind to? Are they like Martin Neimoller, and hiding their heads in the sand because these PAGANS are not coming for them, right now? Do they think that Medicaid will be cut only for ‘blue states’ or only for the ‘democrats’ in their states? Do they believe that not having the tried and true vaccines for the Flu, Measles, Polio, Covid-19, etc will make us healthier? Are they so caught up in the ether they believe the tariffs, the chaos, the private militia of Proud Boys, Oath Keepers, will be good for their bottom line? Are they so blind as to realize when there were no regulations, we had the Triangle Shirt Factory fire, the enslavement of Black people, the lack of a living wage, the cruelty of mine collapses, the belching of smoke from the kilns of steel making plants, etc? Yet, this minority keeps loving Trump, loving cruelty and this is how they see being responsible for freedom works!!

We the People have to change things, have to stand up and say NO. It is incumbent upon each one of us to live our inheritance from the Prophets, to live the examples of our founding fathers, of Lincoln, of Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Washington, FDR, LBJ, Reagan, the Bush’s, and speak truth to power and listen to truth being spoken to us. It is no longer an option that We the People close our ears to truth, it is no longer okay to buy the bullshit of our own self-deception. It is way past time to think that someone will save us. We the People need to remember that the Messiah comes when we are ready for the Messiah, be it the second coming or the first is of no matter. The Talmud relates many instances of Elijah the Prophet being among the poor and the needy, waiting for some human kindness and then the messiah will be here. It is up to We the People to “assume the person next to us is the messiah and weigh our words, watch our hands and if they choose to nor reveal him/herself, it will not matter” as Danny Siegel teaches in his “A Rebbe’sProverb (from the Yiddish)”. We the People have to assume responsibility for Freedom precisely because our elected leaders are not! We the People are capable, resourceful, and spiritually capable to do this vital job.

My years from 15-36 were defined by my irresponsibility towards freedom and everything else. Looking at living through this lens allows me to see how freedom frames my world. When I am responsible for my freedom, I don’t drink, steal, fuck around in the ways I have before. It just doesn’t have the same appeal, when I follow the teaching of Ed Roach, the teachings of the Bible. I know I have helped others realize this profound truth that seems so obvious and, at least 39-45% of us are oblivious to! OY, praying that We the People help everyone wake up and be responsible. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

We have been here before, are we going to prevent another take-over, another Civil War? Year 4 Day 118

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 118

“Freedom is a burden that God has thrust upon man. Freedom is something we are responsible for. If we succeed, we will help in the redemption of the world; if we fail, we may be crushed by its abuse. Freedom as man’s unlimited lordship is the climax of absurdity, and the central issue we face is man’s false sense of sovereignty.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg. 21)

Reading any and all of Rabbi Heschel’s writings, as with other scholars, the phrase from Ecclesiastes, “There is nothing new under the sun” comes to mind often. It both reaffirms what we already know and, for me, it enrages me that we have failed to learn from our past errors, we have failed to make a “complete” T’Shuvah, we continue down a path of cruelty, power-seeking, scapegoating, and bastardizing the teachings of morality and ethical behaviors that the Bible and every other Spiritual text of every Spiritual discipline teach!

In 4 weeks we will celebrate the Holy Day of Shavuot, which is both a harvest festival and, the Rabbis decided, the day we received the Torah at Mount Sinai. For many of us Jews, this is the day of “freedom” began. Prior to Mount Sinai, we were either slaves of the Pharaoh or ‘on our own’ listening to Moses, sort of, etc. I call this period ‘liberty’, when one is at the mercy of their own thoughts, desires, whims and will give lip service to going along with things that the leader says if they don’t think it will serve them. “Freedom”, however, according to Bible, involves God and our relationship with God(substitute Higher Consciousness if you need to). What is the first act of ‘meeting’ God at Mount Sinai according to the Biblical account? It is being given a set of commandments by which to live as individuals and within a community. The first act of Freedom bestowed upon the ragtag group of individuals who left Egypt together, who may or may not have been related, who included people who were not descendants of Jacob, was to command a new sense of morality and demand they live an ethical life! This is the “burden that God has thrust upon man” and we seem to failing in carrying this burden and, as we are told in Leviticus 25:10: “Proclaim Freedom throughout the land and to all its inhabitants therein”.

We are witnessing the undoing of everything the Bible, the New Testament, the Koran, Buddha’s teachings stand for and are wringing our hands instead of fighting back. Trump, Cain-White, Osteen, Rubio, Vought, Graham, Greene, all proclaim their ‘love of Jesus’ and do everything that Jesus railed against. They all want to ‘fight’ antisemitism while supporting anti-semites in their midst. They want to make this a ‘christian nation’ while taking the most unchristian actions possible. They refuse to “welcome the stranger, care for the stranger, love the stranger,” even thought this is commanded by God 36 times in the first 5 Books of the Bible! They refuse to have one law for the stranger and the citizen as the Bible calls for, hell they have separate laws for themselves and everyone else and call this constitutional! This has to be stopped by We the People and the way we stop this is by calling our their lies and their bullshit every time, every day and building the support needed to KICK THEIR ASSES out of our Government and restore “freedom” as it was originally given to us as the path of our country and demand we all learn to deal with “freedom as a burden that God has thrust upon man” instead of some entitlement for the rich, the cruel and the autocrats. All of these so-called ‘good christian folk’ like Vought, Osteen, Cain-White, Greene, Rubio, and now Trump, are actually PAGANS, as defined by David Brooks in his Op-Ed last week in the New York Times on May 1.

In 4 weeks, Jews around the world will be asked again to receive the Bible and accept its teachings and commandments as their path of living. While for years we have been saying yes, it has been a hollow yes for most. All of the descendants of the slaves who left Egypt-and we don’t know all of them so lets assume we all are-are being called to both receive and accept the Bible this year, this day anew! We the People, all of us, are being called to account on the night of Shavuot and we have the opportunity to ‘Tikkun L’Eil Shavuot’ repair the evening before receiving the Bible. We the People are being given the opportunity to study the Bible, to reacquaint ourselves with the ethics and morals of living in “freedom”, the burdens and denials it takes to live in “freedom”, the joy and blessings we get by living in “freedom” for ourselves and ensuring that “all its inhabitants therein” enjoy and carry the “burden God has thrust upon man”. The all night study is to get us prepared to respond as the newly freed slaves did, “Na’Aseh V’Nishma, we will do and then we will understand” this is acting our way into right thinking, which may be the greatest “burden God has thrust upon man”. Rather than thinking our way into action, “freedom” involves doing and then understanding, it means we take the next right action no matter how we think, feel, desire. This is the greatest “burden God has thrust upon man”, to go against the rational mind and rise up to our intuitive mind, to let go of our ‘stinking thinking’ and allow our intrinsic ethical nature to guide us.

This is so important in this moment precisely because the people in power are into cruelty, into money, into power and not into God, not into “freedom”, as Curtis Yarvin, the ‘advisor to J D Vance says: “America has to get over its dictator phobia”! Trump believes he is the ‘anointed one’ and the ‘messiah’, he truly thinks he is in control of the world and his ‘good christian’ advisors applaud him for this. Lindsey Graham, who spoke at the funeral of a true “freedom” loving human being, John McCain, has his nose so far up Trump’s ass that he will need a proctologist to remove it soon and has denied the “burden God has thrust upon man” while dishonoring his friend, who not only accepted the “burden”, he fought for everyone to relish and enjoy “freedom”. Just as Moses called “heaven and earth” to be witnesses, Rev Barber, Rabbi Heschel, Rev King, et al are calling “heaven and earth” to be witnesses to our response to the call being sent out to defend “freedom”, to receive the Bible this Shavuot, to repair our inner lives so we live into the ethical and moral actions we take regardless of how we feel or thing, to carry the “burden God has thrust upon” us for ourselves, our neighbors, the poor and the needy, the generations to come.

I accepted the burden some 38 years ago in a prison yard with Rabbi Mel Silverman and have carried it ever since, imperfectly and I have not abandoned it. This is the call, to carry the burden and we all can do this. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

What is the "bridle" you put on yourself/allow to be put on you to keep you right-sized? Year 4 Day 117

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 117

Education for reverence, the development of a sense of awe and mystery, is a prerequisite for the preservation of freedom. We must learn how to bridle the outrageous presumption of modern man, to cultivate a sense of wonder and reverence, to develop an awareness that something is asked of man.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg21)

The sentence in bold above says it all, in my humble opinion, and it is a lesson that was first taught to us in the Garden of Eden, then again after the flood, then again with Jacob’s ‘unbridled’ desire to con his brother and never truly make amends, to the Israelites who went along with their enslavement in Egypt because they couldn’t believe it was really happening. The lesson continues with Mount Sinai, the 40 years in the wilderness because, ostensibly, because of our refusal to ‘bridle the outrageous presumption” of the newly freed slaves, and up until today. It is truly amazing that humankind just will not be tamed, we seem to be incapable of having a “bridle” put on us so we can restrain our impulse to do what we want to do, whenever we want to do it, no matter whom it many harm. Looking at the Bible and everything in history since does point to this being an issue with humankind since our beginnings.

What is the “outrageous presumption” of human beings? While I do not pretend to know exactly what Rabbi Heschel means, I do believe that the most “outrageous presumption of modern man” is our erroneous belief that we are in control and we can reason out everything, from the workings of the universe to the workings of the human mind and emotions-thereby controlling people and manipulating people to do our will rather than what is in their best interests. The “outrageous presumption” of today’s autocrats is that the people will just go along with them until it is too late for them to rebel, too late to ‘stop the train’ of their taking of absolute power and then We the People will be impotent to do anything and we will start the 4th Reich, as Project 2025 and Trump’s Presidency is sometimes referred to. This “outrageous presumption” that some human beings can do anything they want and there will be no consequences is, unfortunately being proven true by Trump’s co-conspirators, by the Judicial System, by the Congress because of ‘party loyalty’-not facts, not truth, not fulfilling their sworn oaths to “protect and defend the Constitution of the United States of America”! This is the work of PAGANS as David Brooks calls them in his op-ed from Friday’s New York Times. It is the work of the IDOLATORS at our gates in the form of the “prosperity gospel” liars, the Paula Cain-White charlatans, the money-grabbing, power-hungry Russell Vought’s and Project 2025ers who have totally captured the small mindedness of the MAGA crowd. By small mindedness, I am speaking to the inability to hold two opposing thoughts in one’s being in the same moment, I am speaking to the oversimplification and need to have a bad guy, living as “the enemy of my enemy is my friend”, etc.

The “outrageous presumption” of our current situation is best summed up in the ‘joke’ of an A I generated photo of Trump as Pope, which he circulated on his social media site. While his defenders, his ass-kissing, cabinet, VP, and defenders are having a good time with making fun of the people who find it abhorrent that Trump would disgrace the Papacy, the process of the Conclave, the Church with such a tone-deaf post when Pope Francis was just buried, the truth is they are boors, bullies, and believe they can disrespect anyone they want to because of their “outrageous presumption” of their superiority and their power! Wonder, reverence, something being asked of them is so far out of their ken, their understanding of their exalted position in the scheme of life, they would laugh if someone brought these ideas to their attention. Yet, they claim to be “good christian folk” who arrest Rev. William Barber for PRAYING IN THE CAPITAL ROTUNDA!! It is truly unfortunate that our checks and balances have proven to be so weak because of the weakness and fear of elected officials! We are waiting to see what the ass-kissing, I am not accountable to anyone Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito do to convince the conservative majority of the Supreme Court to abandon their oaths of office and bow down to Trump and the Project 2025 people/agenda so Thomas can keep getting paid by his rich white benefactors. He wants to outlaw gay marriage again, what do you think he would say about revisiting the Loving Decision which made inter-racial marriage legal in all 50 States? You know the MAGA Crowd really hates this decision as much as they do gay marriage because embedded in MAGA is the Klan, those southerners who have made “the south will rise again” a reality in the starkest terms.

In this moment, given what is happening in the US, in Israel, in Hungary, in Ukraine, it is imperative that We the People take the cotton out of our ears and put it in our mouths so we can hear the call, witness these “outrageous presumptions” being carried out in our names, and respond to what is being asked of us. We the People are being begged to both witness and testify to the true nature of humankind, the true nature of the universe; to stand up and swear on our good names that wonder and reverence are the only ways to grow in being human instead of being our lower selves, our selfish, egotistical selves who give into and relish in “outrageous presumptions”! It is our mitzvah, our honor to help people find the “wonder and reverence” in their lives, to understand our “destiny to is to aid, to serve” as Rabbi Heschel says elsewhere. We the People have to re-invigorate, re-generate the basic goodness of every human being, we have to appeal to and re-educate people to the call of the divine, the call of our higher consciousness to “Choose Life”, to “love your neighbor as yourself”, to “proclaim freedom throughout the land to all its inhabitants therein”, etc. We the People know that only through wonder and reverence, through radical amazement and a new pair of glasses can we discern truth from fiction, love from hate, and live into the uniqueness each one of us is born with.

I have lived with “wonder and reverence” these past 37+ years and when I forget to, it is disastrous! Either I cause a disaster to happen or one comes at me like a tornado. Living into the “wonder and reverence” I have learned to lean into, doesn’t stop the tornados, it just gives me better responses to them rather than be an opposing tornado! Every time I am the opposing tornado, the damage is devastating to me and to those I love. I Living in wonder is my T’Shuvah. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Awareness of what it takes "for the preservation of freedom"! Year 4 Day 116

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 116

Education for reverence, the development of a sense of awe and mystery, is a prerequisite for the preservation of freedom. We must learn how to bridle the outrageous presumption of modern man, to cultivate a sense of wonder and reverence, to develop an awareness that something is asked of man.”(Insecurity of Freedom pg21)

The first sentence above is a radical statement that would not come to most people’s consciousness without Rabbi Heschel’s teaching, I believe. “Education for reverence” is a phrase not heard too often and, because we are lacking in this education, our freedom is being threatened, abused, and, possibly destroyed. One of the definitions of “education” is: “an enlightening experience” and “reverence” comes from the Latin meaning: “to stand in awe of” and “awe” is defined as “standing in wonder”. So the first phrase above is calling all of us to have, to learn to see and acknowledge the “enlightening experience” of “standing in wonder” in our daily living rather than believe same shit different day. This is a very difficult way of being for most of us and yet, it is not impossible. It takes a shift to making our intuitive mind the gift we need to use daily and our rational mind to serve our intuitive one rather than, as Einstein says, forgetting the “gift” of our intuitive mind and worshiping our rational one!

Saying that “education for reverence,…is a prerequisite for the preservation of freedom” is, to some, an outrageous statement. Especially for ‘non-believers’ who are desperate to refute the existence of any power greater than themselves, including We the People, our constitution, our laws, etc. Yet, as we can see in our world today and throughout history, no autocrat has ever allowed “a sense of awe and mystery” to become the way of their land. They do everything they can to stamp out our “sense of awe and mystery” because when we are living into these two “senses”, it is impossible to overrun us, it is impossible for We the People to buy into the bullshit and nonsense that ‘only I can fix it’ or “I will be your retribution”, “I will make Germany/America/Russia/Israel/Hungary… great again”. And, without an education for reverence, without “a sense of awe and mystery” we are susceptible to the lies of the oligarchs, of the autocrats who make promises they are never going to keep, who say and do anything to gain power and then refuse to relinquish it. Sound familiar? We have never experienced what Trump and his Project 2025 cronies are subjecting us to. Yesterday on May Day, a worker’s day of remembering the victory of an 8 hour work day, there were protests large and small all across the nation, we are not comparing “red/blue” states anymore, we are talking about We the People who value, cherish our “freedom” and whose “sense of awe and mystery” have been awakened, jettisoning them to stand up and make their voices heard!

Immersing ourselves in the first sentence above helps us realize the subtlety and fragility of “the preservation of freedom” entails. Elsewhere Rabbi Heschel calls “freedom” an event, and for us to preserve the event called “freedom”, we have to have a commitment to our “sense of awe and mystery”, a continuous “education for reverence” that keeps growing both our “reverence” and our “awe” and “mystery”. We the People are being called to see the truth of our inner life and the truth of our rational mind, the truth of our commitment to freedom for ourselves and to freedom for everyone. We are being held accountable for our freedom and, as in the Bible, being warned of what happens when we lose our “sense of mystery and awe” thereby losing our freedom and we are, once again, in Egypt, in narrow places where we are at the mercy of a human master and it has never been good for Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, any minority, any ‘conquered people’. Yet, in 1958, Rabbi Heschel warned us about the very thing that we are experiencing, he gave us the cure for it, the prevention techniques for where we are now and, once again, We the People did not listen, did not heed, refused the gift of prophecy!

WTF!! How have We the People once again relinquished our “freedom” to an autocrat? How have We the People once again succumbed to the lies of the wealthy and the idolators like Paula Cain-White and Joel Osteen who are more interested in their personal wealth than they are in developing “a sense of awe and mystery” in themselves and helping another do the same for themself! How have We the People once again repeated the errors of the Israelites when, being more numerous and mighty than the Egyptians, succumbed to the deceptions of Pharaoh and their own self-deceptions and became enslaved? How have We the People bought the bullshit of Trump, Netanyahu, Orban, Putin at the cost of our “sense of awe and mystery”? How have We the People allowed ourselves to become whores and prostitutes for the rich, famous, powerful? These are the questions that haunt us, these are the questions we all need to respond to. These are the questions that will point us in the direction so we can, once again, engage in “education for reverence”,  recover, develop and maintain “a sense of awe and mystery”, learn/relearn the lessons of our ancestors and the wisdom of the Bible, and STAND UP for our FREEDOM and the FREEDOM of every human being. This is the path for We the People to preserve our “freedom” and send the autocrats away.

I am deeply moved by this first sentence and, in a quick examination of myself, realize that there have been times when I took my. “Freedom” for granted and each time it has landed me in an Egypt of my own making under the thumb of a Pharaoh I never want to serve again. Yet, because of my fears in the moment, which vary depending on the situation, I forget to engage in education for reverence, I miss the mark in the “development of a sense of awe and mystery”, finding myself in similar situations to the ones I have left before. I did do 2 terms in the California State Penitentiary system before I found truth and acknowledged who I had become and who the authentic me is. Even in my recovery, I have fallen prey to the seduction of various Pharaohs, each time leading me to a narrow space that tried to constrict me, define me, and isolate me. By the grace of God, I remembered the path out, I crossed my own Red Sea, and I have not fallen prey to this terrible experience for about 5 years. The names of the Pharaohs change, the narrowness never does and I am grateful for a daily discipline that develops within me “a sense of awe and mystery” which keeps me grounded in freedom and love, justice and mercy, kindness and forgiveness. Rather than harbor resentment, I release compassion and pity. Living with “reverence” gives me the freedom we were bestowed with in the Garden. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

What is the driving force in your life today? Is it holiness or winning? Year 4 Day 115

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 115

“Mankind will not perish for lack of information; it may collapse for want of appreciation.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg 21)

Today is Yom HaAtzmaut, Israel Independence Day. It is also the 18th day of the Counting of the Omer. While there will be celebrations of Israel’s independence in Israel and across the Jewish world today, there will be people deep into the different meanings of the Omer for today, there will be great sadness and hatred that Israel exists in many quarters, will there be “appreciation” of the facts that we count the Omer to this day, that we take seriously our march from liberation (Passover) to freedom which happens as a sudden event on Shavuot?

We are so caught up in our ‘fact-finding’ missions that many of us fail to “smell the roses” and are unaware of what is truly going on around us! We have lost our sense of “appreciation” because we keep trying to explain everything, we keep wanting to conquer everything in front of us, we keep trying to have dominion and rule over people and do not show no “appreciation” for the divine image planted within each and every human being. We are so fearless in our march for power and control or fearful of the power and control by another, we fail to appreciate the power within us to do the next right thing, to have “appreciation” that one mitzvah leads to another and the reward is in the doing, not the getting! Today, on this day that should be a celebration, many Jews are lamenting the loss of spirit of the pioneers who fought against all odds to keep Israel a nation, a democracy on its first day of existence when the Arab Nations attacked from all sides! Today, as we are in the 2nd third of the counting of the Omer, many of us are lamenting the loss of the spirit of the Torah that the Ultra-Orthodox are trying to eradicate, that some of the Jews in America believe should be eradicated with their undying support for the policies of hatred towards the stranger, criminalizing the poor, and kicking the needy into the streets instead of into places of care-physical, emotional, spiritual.

How does this happen? All faiths have within them a practice of gratitude, all spiritual disciplines promote and foster an attitude of gratitude. It happens when there is a “want of appreciation”, a lack of gratitude for what we have and gratitude for what we don’t have. Each morning a Jew is to thank God for “returning my soul to me with compassion” and acknowledge God’s “great faithfulness” in each one of us. I believe every faith tradition has such a prayer. Most of us repeat these words by rote, if at all, and fail to truly appreciate the enormous miracle of our waking up! We have become inured to the miracles around us, to the sun rising, the sun setting and, because they are ‘commonplace’, we have forgotten how miraculous these happenings are. We take for granted some relationships, especially familial, and then POOF there is an argument and everyone is so interested in being right, they forget to show “appreciation” for the numerous times this family member has supported, uplifted, helped them. Because we take so much for granted because of our intellectual prowess, our need and capability to ‘explain’ everything we lost our ability to show “appreciation” for what is, for the miracles, for the ‘everyday’ occurrences that we have explained away because if we show “appreciation”, we will have to accept our limitations, we will have to make ourselves right-sized, we can no longer believe it is our ‘right’ to have dominion and rule over another human being(s), we can no longer treat people unkindly, we can no longer seek to deceive and worship idols. We can no longer deny the foundational aspects of democracy, the foundational tenets of the Bible, the New Testament, etc. In other words, we have to give up the bullshit we tell ourselves and spread like wildfire throughout the world. How many likes for our cruelty will no longer matter, what will matter is how many likes we get for telling the truth, for showing kindness, for being just. All of these ‘boring’ paths of life will be raised back to being the “standard of care” for each and every human being.

We the People can make this happen and today, Israel Independence Day, is a perfect time to begin! It takes a reorientation of priorities, a return to what truly matters in life, a new response to everyday affairs, to showing “appreciation” for the holiness and connectivity of this moment with the person in front, on the side, and behind us. We the People are being called upon to sacrifice our false egos, to let go of our need to be right, jettison away our misbelief that we “control the world”, end our fascination with Pharaoh, Genghis Khan, Hitler, Stalin, Putin, Orban, et al. We the People are counting the Omer to remind ourselves that to “proclaim freedom throughout the land and to all its inhabitants therein”(Lev. 25:10) takes more than a phrase or a campaign slogan, it takes action that enhances our ability to show “appreciation” for who we are, for what we are, for what we have. To show “appreciation” is to be grateful and to understand that life is not perfect nor are we humans. To be fallible and accountable, to be committed to growth spiritually and emotionally, to not let our fears run us and to make kindness, justice, mercy, love, truth a daily practice is to show “appreciation” for being alive, “appreciation for being free”. Using the gift of free-will, the gift of our intuitive mind, is another exquisite way of showing “appreciation” for being alive, for being human. The question in front of all of us, on this 18th day of the Omer, on this commemoration of the fight and the spirit of the Israeli pioneers, is: Will we continue to abuse our fellow human beings just because we can or will we show “appreciation” for what we have and give our “intuitive mind” control of our rational desires and make the phrase from Leviticus above into a reality!

I am guilty of not showing “appreciation” all the time. While I am truly grateful for my life and all of my experiences, I forget to show “appreciation” to the ones I love at times, especially when I am scared and too focused on what I am doing. When I make “winning” more important than enjoying the ride, I lack “appreciation” for what is and for the people in my life as well as the stranger, the poor, and the needy. I do this most with my wife, Harriet, and I am sorry for these outbursts and commit to control myself, remember how blessed I am and show my thanks to God by being grateful to the people in my orbit! I am good about not trying to control all my surroundings and staying “in my lane” for the most part. I am aghast at the lack of “appreciation” shown by those ‘good christian folk’ in the current administration who are descendants of the pagans of old, the KKK of the 20th Century. My appreciation will show by my dedication to not allowing evil to win! God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Every One is endowed with a sense of wonder, a sense of mystery - Year 4 Day 114

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 114

“The grandeur and mystery of the world that surrounds us is not something which is perceptible only to the elect. All men are endowed with a sense of wonder, with a sense of mystery. But our system of education fails to develop it and the anti-intellectual climate of our civilization does much to suppress it. Mankind will not perish for lack of information; it may collapse for want of appreciation.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg 21)

Each morning, I pick up this book and read these excerpts I am moved beyond description by all and I choose the ones that speak to me about myself, humanity and our current situation. Hence, at a time when the “elect” have taken over our way of life, when the “elect” have decided to bring down our democratic norms, when the “elite” have sold enough people the bullshit that they care in order to get elected, we find ourselves walking around in a daze, in anger, and, to our benefit and credit, in protest. Our current experience is the proof-text of the first sentence above. While the current “elect” still believe they can con and hoodwink the populace, while they are still certain that they can continue to sell the lie that only they know what ‘Christ’, ‘Moses’ were saying while bastardizing almost all their principles, while these “elect” believe they can pull off the scam of scams by making Trump ‘the anointed one’, we are witnessing more and more people raise up their perception, open their ‘eyes’ and use their intuitive mind to see what is real and what is their mendacity. In the program of Alcoholics Anonymous we speak of a “spiritual awakening” which is our waking up to “the grandeur and mystery of the world” that we did not perceive, that wasn’t perceptible to us because we shut our eyes, our souls, our minds to it. This is what must have happened in America and in Israel in order for Bibi and Trump to gain such power.

What We the People have to continue to develop and spread the word about is that “all men are endowed with a sense of wonder” and because we are endowed with it, it is incumbent upon us to use it, to live into it and to not let the “elect” tell us our “sense of mystery” is ‘wrong’. From our “sense of wonder, sense of mystery” comes our ability to see what could be, as Bobby Kennedy did and wanted to make happen before he was assassinated by people who were afraid of him. We the People are being called to speak the validity of each person’s “sense of wonder” and how to use it to benefit everyone around them as well as themselves, how to live into it so they can be free and joyous even when feeling constrained and unhappy. Freedom comes from our willingness to use our “sense of wonder, sense of mystery” for the benefit of humanity, not for selfish gains as the “elect” are doing today. What Lutnick, a Jew, gets from the tariffs that are crippling the small businessperson, going to cause much pain to we the consumers, is a mystery to me. That he enjoys his power, his anti-Jewish, anti-religious, behaviors and believes that he and his other “elect” are able to manipulate the “grandeur and mystery of the world” to their liking, to their benefit and screw everyone else is the greatest Anti-Semitic, Anti-Christian way of being that one can imagine! Yet, Lutnick, that great funder of ‘Jewish’ causes refuses to live as a Jew!

The department of Education has failed us in many ways, most of all in the area of developing our “sense of grandeur and mystery”, in shutting down our “sense of wonder” by making students learn the formulas, learn the facts and learn the rules and then stop. Of course we need to know REAL, TRUE facts (not the alternative ones of Lutnick, Trump, Rubio, Bondi, Hegseth, et al), of course we need to learn the formulas and the rules, the issue is we are committing a spiritual and intellectual Felony by not using them then to spark new ideas, to engage in difficult discussions about moral and immoral actions, to learn how to trust our “sense of wonder, sense of mystery” to be in awe and reverence at the simple day to day happenings of the natural world, to know that something other than us causes the world to keep going. The department of Education has stopped the free-flow of ideas and cut out so many creative parts of education that we are raising idiots, automatons, kids are going to college to get jobs, not life skills, to increase their money-making opportunities, not to learn how to discover the joys of life, how to navigate through the negativity and keep one’s perspective and grow ones intuitive mind. Because of this, less people go into public service, less people are going into the Clergy, less people are going into social work, humanities all because our education system belittles these important careers, pushes our best and brightest to Wall Street, to Meta, etc. Hence the people in our Clergy are, many times, the most mediocre, the ones who couldn’t make it anywhere else and took the path of clergy as a job not as a calling. Some, like Joel Osteen, Paula Cain-White and their “elect” have taken the job to a whole new level of Mendacity by enriching themselves while bastardizing Christ and forgetting totally about God. Yes, the system of education has failed us both in the secular realm and the religious realm.

I am a survivor of these truths, when I was curious and wanted to engage in my “sense of wonder” about the things I was learning in elementary school and beyond, I was shut down by well-meaning teachers who had a lesson plan to follow. This is where my father, z”l, took up the mantle as my teacher. Upon his death, there was no one to talk to and my “sense of wonder” was actually ridiculed, I was told my intuitive mind was constantly wrong and I had no one to hear me. I am realizing this truth from this writing. This was true in religious school as well as in secular school. It was so true that while reading Death of a Salesman in High School the teacher kept putting down the life of a salesman, the dreams and hopes of a salesman, the sense of wonder and joy of a salesman-to me putting down everything my father was and stood for. I got thrown out of her class, needless to say. I am embarrassed by my lack of stubbornness to stay the course of “wonder”, by my willingness to give up my sense of “grandeur and mystery” because they were not validated by the “elect” of the moment. Had I read Rabbi Heschel then, my choices might have been different. I continue to encourage the people in my orbit to grow their “sense of mystery, sense of wonder” so they can embrace the “grandeur” of their surroundings and the “grandeur” of their intuitive minds. I am no longer waiting for anyone’s validation, I make mistakes, I am still loud and abrasive, and I don’t need someone’s permission to see the world through my own eyes, I certainly don’t and won’t go along with the “elect” lock, stock and barrel because then I give up my self, my soul, my life. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark.

"Sensing the Wonder and Mystery of existence" ? - Year 4 Day 113

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 113

“Faith in God cannot be forced upon man. The issue is not only lack of faith but the vulgarization of faith, the misunderstanding and abuse of freedom. Our effort must involve a total reorientation about the nature of man and the world. And our hope lies in the certainty that all men are capable of sensing the wonder and mystery of existence and that all men have a capacity for reverence.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg. 20)

Reading and re-reading the words in bold above sadden me, enrage me, and leave me wondering what happened between the delivery of this talk, Rabbi Heschel’s teaching at both JTS and Union Theological Seminary, his friendship with MLK, his anti-Vietnam protesting and what we are experiencing today. What was the reason people wanted to believe the bullshit of televangelists rather than the truth and wisdom of people like Rabbi Heschel, the Berrigan Brothers, Rev. King, et al? How many times does humankind have to suffer the consequences and indignities of wanna be autocrats, real autocrats, and become enslaved to the rich and powerful before We the People say ENOUGH???

Religion is part of the problem unfortunately. Not religion per se, rather the way the ‘leaders of religious orders/movements’ have engaged in the “vulgarization of faith, the misunderstanding and abuse of freedom” as we discussed yesterday. The “total reorientation about the nature of man and the world” has to begin with the lying Bastards who proclaim ‘I know the word of god, I know the will of god’, making their will into God’s will and wanting people to worship them, not Christ, not Adonai, not Allah; these mendacious masters along with the Trump-Putin-Orban-Ayatollah-MBS crowd of autocrats are leading We the People in a “reorientation about the nature of man and the world” that is totally false, totally self-seeking and self-serving, totally against the authentic “nature of man and the world”. While we all have a Yetzer HaRa, an ‘evil’ inclination, as we find in the Cain and Abel story; “negativity desires you much and you can rule/master it”. One could say it is in our capability to do evil, to give into the evil ways we learn in our youth yet, the Bible teaches we don’t have to, we have a choice and those who claim we are born in sin, we are all sinners, etc miss the point the Bible is teaching, miss the point of Rabbi Heschel’s words above, miss the point of “I have a Dream”, miss the point of “judging a person on their character rather than the color of their skin”.

Religion is supposed to be leading this charge, hence Rabbi Heschel speaking at a conference on “Religion in a Free Society” in 1958; 67 years ago this need for We the People to engage in this “reorientation” was acknowledged, again as the Prophets acknowledged so long ago. Yet, We the People did not listen, instead we used and received religion as something to soothe us, something to caress us and lull us into some benign stupor. Religion is here to uproot us, it is a gift that allows us to reorient ourselves to the “true north” of being human, the honor and privilege of being a “partner with God” in the upkeep, discovery, and creativity of our world. It is past time for people to join Rev William Barber and pray at the Capital, it is time for We the People to protest and demand from LYING TED CRUZ, Cowardly Josh Hawley et al to put their money where their mouth is-if they are so concerned with ‘anti-christian bias’ why do they arrest a Preacher who is praying to Christ?? The absurdity is not lost on me. Where are the Clergy protesting this travesty of Justice when the insurrectionists are pardoned and called ‘heroes’ by the asshole in the White House and his henchmen/women, and an authentic Man of Faith is arrested for praying in “ the People’s House”. WTF??

We the People are being called to do two seemingly opposite actions at the same time; have hope and have certainty. If I am certain, why would I need hope one might ask. Certainty is the “firm conviction that something is the case, something is reliably true” and hope is defined as “a feeling of trust”. Neither of these are absolutes, yet they go together much better than one would think at first blush. Rabbi Heschel is coaching us to live into the “certainty” of our capability “of sensing the mystery and wonder of existence”. This teaching is calling to our souls, to our inner faith and knowing that humanity can rise above the lies, the obliviousness, the snake-oil sales pitches of the Clergy and their masters/slaves who are in power today in the U.S, Israel, Hungary, etc. This teaching is the essence of the religious life, it encapsulates the entire Bible, its message and its paths. As We the People say about the Bible: “It is a tree of life to all that grasp it, its ways are ways of pleasantness, all of its paths are peace.” Even the Rabbis of old knew that there is more than one way to understand and live into the Bible and they tell us this in the prayer we say before closing the Ark after reading the Torah. We the People have within us the capability to change course of our living, change the course of the nature of humankind, change the orientation of people towards doing the next right thing instead of the next expedient selfish action. We the People have the technology and the GPS guide, the Bible and its offshoots. Isn’t it time we demand they be used to solve our current and future problems, our current and future hatreds, our current and future autocratic enslavements??

I am enraged about Rev. Barber-full stop. I am totally pissed off at the Rabbis who, since 1958, have failed to heed the words of Rabbi Heschel and keep giving students bullshit pap-be it as dogma in some centers of Jewish Learning or be it ‘nice stories’ as in other centers of Jewish Learning. To be a Jew is to be obligated, to owe a debt that is never repaid, to honor the commitment of Na’Aseh V’Nishma, we will do and we will understand. This was so hard for me for so many years, I knew this to be true and my anger, resentment, experience of being alone in the world after my father’s death drowned out the truth my soul was begging me to hear. The actions I took because of anger, resentment, aloneness, and booze make me shiver and, while I have made my amends to the people I could, I have ‘paid my debt to society’, I know I was betraying the debt I had. I have been paying my debt for the past 37+ years, I have experienced the “reorientation” Rabbi Heschel is speaking about and I have been engaged in helping another(s) experience their own “reorientation” as well. It is an honor to be alive and I dedicate each day to learning new ways to reorient myself to honor my being in the Image of the divine. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Vulgarization of faith, misunderstanding and abuse of freedom leads us to... Year 4 Day 112

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 112

“Faith in God cannot be forced upon man. The issue is not only lack of faith but the vulgarization of faith, the misunderstanding and abuse of freedom. Our effort must involve a total reorientation about the nature of man and the world. And our hope lies in the certainty that all men are capable of sensing the wonder and mystery of existence and that all men have a capacity for reverence.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg. 20)

In the Haggadah we read from on Passover there is the terrible ‘story’ of the four sons, wherein both the “wise” son and the “evil” son ask the same question and, for some unknown reason, the Rabbis decided to make one of the son’s “evil”. They seem to be going against the first sentence above, “faith in God cannot be forced upon man”. Yet, it is not only the Rabbis of antiquity who go against the first sentence above, we see this phenomenon in every faith where fundamentalists rule and, truth be told, in every spiritual discipline that has a fundamentalist sect to it! This “forced” belief in God and “faith” in God has never worked so well, the Church tried it, and we ended up with the Spanish Inquisition which led to the downfall of Spain. While one could say there was success, what really happened was a sense of enslavement by the people for whom “faith in God” was being “forced” upon them and, in many instances, beautiful spiritual traditions were lost and the unique identities of tribes, peoples were eradicated, which made them and all of us poorer! We are seeing another incarnation of this terrible evil being perpetrated upon people in the U.S.A. by the ‘christian nationalists’, the people behind and implementing “project 2025”, the Trump White House Office of Faith, even the great Grifter-In-Chief, the consummate Mendacious Master, Donald Trump is calling for “christian values” to be taught in schools, to be the basis of ‘governance’. This asshole doesn’t even know what a true “Christian Value” is nor do the ‘religious’ fanatics around him! Yet, they are trying very hard to do to everyone what Rabbi Heschel is railing against and this is not good for people who authentically practice their faith, for whom “faith in God” is what keeps our engine running and ensures we always return to doing the “next right thing”!

The second sentence above is so important to roll around in, to immerse ourselves in. We do not have a “lack of faith”, we have the “vulgarization of faith, the misunderstand and abuse of freedom” happening, and I believe this is the greatest issue facing us and has always faced humanity. People have “faith” in themselves, “faith” in their beliefs, “faith” in their idols, “faith” in the lies they tell themselves, “faith” in their limited vision and eyesight about living, “faith” in their biases and prejudices, their judgmental attitudes, etc. Human beings do not suffer from a “lack of faith”, in my humble opinion, we suffer from misguided faith, from “vulgarization of faith”. Vulgar comes from the Latin meaning “common people” and is defined as “lacking sophistication, unrefined”. “Faith in God” can never become commonplace, we have seen what happens when it does, God is used as a weapon, as a punisher, as a threat, as a rewarder, as all things the human being(who isn’t being human) ‘makes’ God into-going against the 2nd Commandment of not making “false Images”, yet these ‘holy rollers’ who are trying to remake America, reduce Democracy, destroy the Constitution, continue to violate so many of the commandments, so many of the tenets of Christ, in their “vulgarization of faith”! The ‘holy rollers’ are not only believers, leaders, and followers of ‘christian nationalism’, they are being joined by fundamentalist Jews, Muslims, etc because, in some parallel universe, the Jews think these ‘friends of Israel’ who adhere to the KKK tenets, who are racists, and hate Jews while wanting Israel to start the war to end all wars and the Rapture come about, are their allies!! The ‘holy rollers’ want their freedom while denying the same to everyone else who is not in the upper echelons of their movement. They have no regard for the widow, the stranger, the poor, the needy, the orphan as Christ and the Bible exhort us to. They could care less about redeeming the captive and caring for one’s kinsmen, as we are commanded to do. Rather than build their tent large enough for all to enter, these ‘holy rollers’ deny entrance to anyone who is not pure in their beliefs, not a ‘good aryan’ in terms of dedication to their efforts and certainly not people of color or ‘those liberal jews’. “There shall be one law for the stranger and citizen alike”, “proclaim freedom throughout the land and to all its inhabitants therein” are anathema to the current administration and their ‘holy roller’ fan club. They are relishing their “abuse of freedom”, they revel in their cruelty, they admire their ability to make the ‘masses’ misunderstand what freedom is and should be.

WE THE PEOPLE have to stop this madness! We the People have to take to the streets, we have to march and pressure Congress to DO THEIR FUCKING JOB! We the People are being called upon to tear down the curtain on today’s version of “The Wizard of Oz/America”. We the People have to use our joy and love of God to promote the TRUTH about faith, it is a gift that every human being possess and We the People must fight against this “misunderstanding and abuse of freedom” that is being perpetrated upon the nation and the world. We the People have the examples of other periods in our history when standing UP for what is right and true and how our doing so changed the course of the country. These assholes in charge have been with us for a long time and We the People ignored them at our own peril and NOW is the TIME for We the People to take back our country from the fundamentalist ‘christian nationalists, take back Israel from the right-wing ‘fundamentalist jewish nationalists’, take back the “vulgarization of faith” that is so prevalent right now and end the “misunderstanding and abuse of freedom”! We the People must begin with ourselves, ridding ourselves of our own false gods, our own idolatry, and re-covenant with God, with our higher consciousness and take the next right action.

I have never been good with anything that is ‘forced’ upon me. I couldn’t believe the Bible as everything in it happened and is accurate, I couldn’t believe that good always triumphs over evil, I couldn’t believe in a god who would ‘take’ my father from me in my early teens. I see all of these “couldn’t’s” as “vulgarizations of faith”, as “misunderstandings” of freedom. I am beyond grateful that  I found a path back to the truth of living, to the honoring and engaging in “faith in God”. I work hard every day to rid myself of my “misunderstandings and abuse of freedom” so I can better serve community, family, friends, and myself. I don’t go along to get along and I no longer need to know the why’s of being cut off from some people, I no longer need to be right and I no longer need to be all wrong. This is the greatest freedom “faith in God” has brought to me! God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Debt, Imperfection, Service to God, - Year 4 Day 111

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 111

“Ultimate commitment includes the consciousness of being accountable for the acts we perform under freedom; the awareness that what we own we owe; the capacity for repentance; that a life without the service of God is a secret scandal.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg.20)

Yesterday Pope Frances was buried, not in the Vatican but rather a smaller private burial after the huge Chapel ceremony befitting a man who did so much for so many of the voiceless and powerless Catholics and non-Catholics across the globe. It brings to mind the power of the first phrase in bold above. Trump, Putin, Netanyahu, and other oligarchs as well as many people who are in the top 1% on the socio-economic scale believe they own their wealth, their property, their lives forgetting that they owe rather than own. Rabbi Heschel is reminding us, informing us that everything we ‘have’ is a gift, everything we ‘have’ is temporary, that everything we ‘have’ is to be used in service of something greater than ourselves, not for our own selfish desires and our misuse of the power each human being possess. What we ‘have’ is to be used to enhance our dignity and the dignity of every other human being we come into contact with either in person or virtually, in writing, painting, in whatever our creative talents are.    We are being called to remember who we are, human beings entrusted with making our corner of the world better for everyone around us and for the future generations, we are not to use up all the resources for our selfish desires, we are not to use what we have to enhance our own names, we are not to engage in actions that harm another, that enslave another, that belittle a sovereign nation nor their leader who is fighting, literally and figuratively, for the sovereignty of his nation, Donald Trump, J.D. Vance, Marco Rubio. The United States doesn’t own Greenland nor the Panama Canal, it doesn’t own the right to dictate to Ukraine to be happy that Putin is ‘giving up’ taking the entire country, no matter what these CHARLATANS in the administration are saying. Where is Paula Cain-White advising the President about “Christian Charity”? Where are the people reminding Trump that Pope Frances’ funeral was NOT about him? Why are all these “good christians”, who pray all the time in the White House, not telling the President what real Christian Values are from the Gospels of Christ not the prosperity Gospel they preach? Oh yeah, none of these ‘good christians’ and ‘good catholics’ and ‘good jews’ believe the words of the Bible, they only use them for their advantage, so they believe they can OWN the Bible’s narrative as well as everything else. Talk about desecration of the Word of God-these assholes are Mendacious Masters at this!!

The second phrase in bold above is what life is really all about, as I am hearing Rabbi Heschel this morning. “The capacity for repentance” is at the core of the human experience, it is the recognition of our imperfect nature, of our ability to make mistakes, learn from them, repair the damage, and re-sew the fabric of relationships we tore apart. Every human being has this “capacity for repentance” and it is horribly distressing that so many people have lost the willingness to say: “OOPS, I MADE A MISTAKE”. However, it goes hand in hand with the lie people tell themselves that they “own” what they have, they can do what they want with their lives, so they are never wrong nor do they have to make amends, engage in repentance nor accept the T’Shuvah(repentance) of anyone else! Rather, they use the vulnerabilities of another against them, they use the repentance of another to their advantage and they actually believe they are impervious to mistakes, they are incapable of making an error, and, like Trump and Nixon believe, if they are doing something, it must be true, correct and right. This is how far away we are from this phrase as well as “what we own, we owe”! Yet, the Republican Congress, the MAGA crowd still support this ‘perfect’ incarnation of ‘christ’, this ‘messiah’ as he has been anointed by the ‘prosperity gospel’ crowd. Rather than lead us in repentance, as Pope Frances did, these lying Clergy, of all the faiths that still support the Mendacious Masters, are leading people to their own ruin and away from “the service of God”.

I would disagree with Rabbi Heschel’s last phrase, just a bit. The lack of living “in the service of God” is no longer “a secret scandal”. This scandal is in front of our eyes and in our faces, the question is when We the People will “lift up our eyes and see”, when will We the People look inside of our souls, into our inner lives and admit the true nature of our wrongs against our souls, our fellow human beings and against God? When will We the People develop a plan of action that moves us closer to our authentic self, closer to the awareness of the debt we “owe” for being alive, the “capacity for repentance” and the power to move forward in our new path of “service to God”? These are the gifts we receive for being human, rather than just human beings. We the People are being called upon in this time of the counting of the Omer, the countdown to Mount Sinai, the days until we receive the Torah, the Pentecostal as some Christians call Shavuot. We the People need to open our ears and our eyes and get ourselves clean enough to be able to receive the Torah this year, be able to embrace it more, be clean enough to re-covenant with God, with one another and live our humility out loud, be grateful for what we have and what we don’t have, look upon our “capacity for repentance” as the gift of growth and awareness, and remember whatever we do has to be “in service to God” and in service to one another. This means accepting the repentance of another as God accepts ours, knowing we have to care for what we owe and be stewards of the earth for the next generations, not ‘drill baby drill’. We the People have to demand of ourselves and one another, a rebirth of spirit, a rebirth of decency, a rebirth of caring, a rebirth of justice, a rebirth of “love your neighbor as yourself”, “love the stranger”, “care for the needy, the poor, the widow and the orphan”.

I have been living these phrases for the past 37 years. Certainly not perfectly and to the best of my ability in the moment. I know the path of “repentance” is hard and not guaranteed to re-sew the fabric I have torn, I know that living “in service to God” is more than saying blessings, more than studying the Torah, more than doing the rituals, to be “in service to God” I look at people like Rabbi Heschel, Rev. King, my grandfathers, Pope Frances, and so many others as examples and for guidance. I am so sad and enraged at the terrible turn our country as taken and I am powerless to change it alone, yet together, through writing, talking, respecting the Tzelem of the MAGA crowd, I can continue to stay in “line with the divine” and live a little better each day. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Commitment, Accountability are fundamentals for living a life of freedom - Year 4 Day 110

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 110

“Ultimate commitment includes the consciousness of being accountable for the acts we perform under freedom; the awareness that what we own we owe; the capacity for repentance; that a life without the service of God is a secret scandal.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg.20)

The truths, values, morals expressed in the sentence above are undeniable for people of faith, people of spirit and, knowing this, people of non-faith, people who are mendacious, thieves, spiritual rapists use these tenets in the most egregious manner. We are, once again, witnessing this phenomenon today, when Trump gives Putin kudos for raping Ukraine and says “Russia is giving up taking the whole country” as some sort of sacrifice or compromise, accountability is thrown out the window. Of course, when Trump refuses to be accountable and the Supreme Court says only he is not accountable for his actions, what can one expect? The people who help him be unaccountable, who support his betraying the tenets of “freedom” and our Constitution, they will find out they are accountable and suffer for their rape of “freedom”.

Accountability is the first lesson Adam, Eve, and their son, Cain learn in the Bible. While they have free-will choice, they quickly learn that this doesn’t lead to them being able to do whatever they want to do. Cain is marked, Adam and Eve have to leave their beautiful home they were gifted, all because they did not think they would be held accountable. When they were held accountable, Adam ‘divorced’ himself from God (an interpretation of the Hebrew) and Cain cried like a stuffed pig! “I do what I want AND being held accountable-how outrageous” they seem to be saying, just like Trump and the Jan.6th rioters, the white people who lynched so many Black people, who killed Leo Frank, the Germans who helped, participated in the Shoah, the Polish people who joyously killed the Jews in their midst, ad infinitum throughout history. Yet, as the first phrase above comes to remind us, there can be no real, no “ultimate commitment” without the “consciousness of being accountable for the acts we perform under freedom”. When we are enslaved, when we are threatened with death, we are not doing anything “under freedom” and this is a very important distinction.

The law firms, the corporations, Columbia University, and all of the other entities that are bending the knee, kissing the ring, have their noses so far up Trump’s ass that if he stops short they will need surgery to have it removed, all believe they will escape accountability. The Republican lawmakers who are meekly going along with this carnage, this rape of our Constitution, the desecration of the Declaration of Independence, the dishonoring of the men who fought at Lexington and Concord 250 years ago, think they can skate by and they are refusing to be accountable even to their constituents, because they believe they don’t have to worry about being re-elected because Trump is going to cancel elections as we know them! We are being taken advantage of by the very people and institutions we believed we could trust to keep us safe, to keep one another in check, to honor the Oath of Office they take. How foolish we are/were.

Religious Institutions are, in my opinion, the worst betrayers of the first phrase above. When ‘orthodox’ jews, ‘prosperity gospel’ christians, ‘radical’ islamists claim that they are doing what God wants, what it says in the Bible, Koran, We the People have to start calling BULLSHIT on them. When these charlatans keep spouting that “Trump is the anointed one of Jesus Christ” We the People need to stand up and demonstrate outside of their churches, temples, mosques for Truth, for Justice, for Mercy, and demand that these idolators stop walking in the footsteps of Pharaoh, end their incessant drive to destroy Judaism, Catholicism, Christianity, Islam and be accountable for their theft of the souls and the minds of their followers. We the People are being called by this first phrase above to call these desecrators of God’s name to account, to hold them responsible for their free-will sins and lies, for their using the vulnerabilities of people against them, thus engaging in the most evil of actions, as M.Scott Peck teaches. These so-called ‘people of faith’ are the same as Laban, the same as Bilaam, opaque MF’s who are for sale to the highest bidder, liars and cheats, spiritual rapists, and crooks. Yet, they are so ‘revered’, Trump has given them an office in the White House and he has instituted an “anti-christian bias” campaign in the Department of Justice-because christians like the KKK, the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys all have been discriminated against whenever they are held accountable. In this upside down ‘religious’ view, accountability for anything ‘we’ do is wrong and accountability for everything ‘those people’ do is good, even if it is lawful, if it promotes freedom as promised in the first amendment. We the People have to STAND UP and hold these assholes accountable, beginning with the Clergy, beginning with these so-called ‘good christian, jewish, muslim folk’! Remember, what someone will do to another human being, they will do to you!

I had planned on writing on the whole sentence when I sat down and got carried away with the idea of “ultimate commitment”. The difference between me 39 years ago and me since 1987, is that I possess the “consciousness of being accountable for the acts I perform under freedom” and, while I do not always agree with someone else’s interpretation of my acts, I do agree that I am accountable for my actions. I have taken the hits and the kudos and have grown in my equanimity in my responses to both. This is in direct contrast to my earlier days when I denied all responsibility and always had someone, something else to blame for my failures, my actions. This is the difference between Mark Borovitz the slave and Mark Borovitz the free person. This is the difference between living under ‘the rules don’t apply to me’ and living a covenantal life. Having the “consciousness of being accountable” gives me pause before I take an action, it also causes me to trust what I know in my soul as the next right thing to do-no matter the outcome-because we all know that we can do what is right and good and not ‘win’. Being accountable has also made it easy for people to target me and I accept this truth with greater serenity, greater clarity than I ever have. I am not afraid to be asked Reb Zuysa’s question:”why were you not more like Mark Borovitz?”. I live me, messy, error-filled, fallible, imperfect, infinitely worthy and full of dignity, equal to all and honoring the uniqueness of me and of you. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Ultimate Commitments, Sacrifices, Moral and Spiritual Exaltations- are these the foundations of your living? Year 4 Day 109

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 109

“Religion’s major effort must be to counteract the deflation of man, the trivialization of human existence. Our religious traditions claim that man is capable of sacrifice, discipline, of moral and spiritual exaltation, that every man is capable of an ultimate commitment.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg. 20)

Continuing on from yesterday’s quote, I did get caught up in the first sentence because it is so enraging to me the bastardization of religion, the grift being perpetrated upon unsuspecting decent people by the charlatans and idolators who have ‘anointed’ Donald Trump as the messiah, as Jesus’ warrior-going against everything Jesus says in the Gospels, but don’t let truth get in the way of a good con!

The embolden words above point to the issue that has haunted “religion” almost from the beginning. While the claims above are absolutely true, the people ‘in charge’, the “trusted servants” have been preaching a gospel of more, more, more for themselves and their benefactors, not more “sacrifice” for God, for one another! They have made “sacrifice” synonymous with give more to the church, to the pastor, don’t you realize Joel Osteen needs another car, another jet, another…! These mendacious ‘religious’ figures like Paula Cain-White are so excited to sell their wares on the Government website and claim they are ‘healing’ people and doing ‘god’s work’ when God calls for us to sacrifice to help the poor and the needy, the widow and the orphan, we make sacrifices to acknowledge our errors and celebrate our good fortunes-we are not called upon to “sacrifice” to make the Priests rich-only to give them enough to maintain themselves, their households and the Temple-not build multi-million dollar homes with 24 car garages, etc.

“Religion” has been overtaken by human beings who are only interested in their agendas, not God’s, not the agenda of the Buddha, Jesus, Mohammed, Moses, the Prophets, etc. They are disciplined when it comes to their lies, their grab for power, their hatred of anyone who isn’t a White Anglo Saxon Christian and adheres to the fascist agendas of Trump, the autocratic agendas of Putin and Orban, etc. What is totally baffling is how many Jews follow and get in bed with these descendants of the KKK and relish it! The “discipline” spoken about above has been replaced by the ‘discipline’ of loyalty to boss, fidelity to the ‘cause’, and subjugation of everything one knows about right and wrong to follow the ‘righteous indignation’ of the religious zealots who believe that their ‘brand’ of christianity should be the nation’s religion. And the Jews who support this and them have forgotten how, throughout history, it is never “good for the Jews” when ‘christianity’ takes over the land.

The only “ultimate commitment” being sought, demanded today by the clergy in powerful positions nationally, seems to be the “ultimate commitment” to themselves, to giving them money, to supporting the fascism of Trump, Vance, the Republican Party and, of course, the autocracy of Vladimir Putin, cause after all, he is a white man! The “moral and spiritual exaltation” being peddled is one of the ‘high’ one gets from knowing they are supporting their pastor, they are helping to annihilate the ‘enemies’ of the dictator, they are helping to raise up “der fuhrer” a little higher who in turn is raising up the ways of christ, the warrior king-just like the Gospels proclaim??? WHAT THE FUCK are people thinking??!!

We the People are being called to recapture our individual capability to “sacrifice” what is in our interest for the sake of what is best for another, for the whole. As Rabbi Heschel says, I am paraphrasing, the interests of another has to be my concern. We the People are being reminded of our opportunity to “sacrifice” for the greater good of all, to let go of our inflated egos and become right-sized once again. We are being called to live into our unique talents and spread them throughout our corner of the world for the benefit of another(s) and the fulfillment of our soul. This is the “moral and spiritual exaltation” I believe Rabbi Heschel is speaking about. In the 95 days of absolute CHAOS, brought about by Trump and the Republican Party, we are witnessing the destruction of every tenet, every moral and spiritual pillar upon which “religion” has stood, thereby destroying what “religion” is so they can establish their “fourth reich” with Trump as “der fuhrer” and Leavitt and Bondi as Goebbels, Hegseth as Goring, Lutnick as Bormann, Vought and Miller along with Bannon as Himmler, and Musk (and the other billionaires who joined the band) as Krupp, Farben, Vogler! We the People have to accept the mantle of “ultimate commitment” to Truth, to Decency, to Morality, to Spiritual Connection, to Living the Covenant made at Mount Sinai, to Justice, to Mercy, to Kindness, to Forgiveness, to Compassion, to Mercy, etc. These are facets of the Covenant made at Sinai, these are part of the promises made by God to Moses and the Israelites in Egypt, these are the fundamental tenets of the Bible. Only when We the People commit to and follow through on these covenantal agreements, only when We the People stay loyal to the principles that brought us out of Egypt and gave us the courage, the strength, the faith to enter the land of Canaan, can we defeat the charlatans, the idolators, the fascists! It takes more than a fascist regime to defeat the people who adhere to the Covenant, who are partners with the Ineffable One in living into the fullness, the richness, the greatness of being human!

I keep hearing this call to DO SOMETHING and I never experience that I am doing ‘enough’! I think this is a plague that visits itself upon so many people who are, like the little boy, putting their fingers in the dam only to have more leaks spring up. Yet, I also realize that I can do only what I can do and I am powerless to make another person hear me, to dictate to another person what they should do. I can, however, influence, cajole, manipulate another person into seeing the path of living well that is uniquely theirs. I can and have helped people find their way through a mass of confusion, lies they tell themselves, see what they have been oblivious to and find their passion and purpose as well as their spiritual core. My life, these past 38 years, is lived and living in “moral and spiritual exaltation” as imperfectly as I am-this is the “address” I live at. I live with joy and spirit, passion and a moral compass that points true north, even when I can’t follow it. I am my father’s son, I am, once again, on the trek from Egypt to Sinai, from slavery to freedom and my “sacrifices” are gifts to myself which allow me to be of service to another. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Deflation and trivialization of the human being has become the way of politics, religion! Year 4 Day 108

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 108

“Religion’s major effort must be to counteract the deflation of man, the trivialization of human existence. Our religious traditions claim that man is capable of sacrifice, discipline, of moral and spiritual exaltation, that every man is capable of an ultimate commitment.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg. 20)

Ruminating in the words above, as in all of the words of the giants of religious faith, asking the right questions of our religious leaders, delving into the words of the Bible, the New Testament individually and finding ourselves in the texts, as all the characters, all of the archetypes is the only way to utilize this wisdom and all wisdom. I would say, once again, Rabbi Heschel’s prescience is on display here. He saw the dumbing down of religion, especially Judaism in the 1950’s and looked upon it with horror! He missed the Judaism of his youth, maybe an idealized one maybe not, but a Judaism that was vibrant and true, one that was lived in all areas of life, wasn’t relegated to Services on Friday night and Saturday morning. In the words above, I hear his lament at the state of religion, all religions, in the late 1950’s and can hear him crying at the state of religion in 2025!

Be it the New Apostolic Reformation, the Prosperity Gospels, the ‘Orthodoxy’ of Ben G’Vir, Smotrich, the settlers, the radical Islamists, all of these movements have contributed to “the deflation of man” rather than “counteract” it. This is where we find ourselves today, in a world that is upside down, in a world where ‘religious fervor’ is contributing, aiding and abetting “the trivialization of human existence”, rather than reminding us that we are all created equal, all in the Image of God, all with “certain unalienable rights”… How is it possible that We the People could buy into the lies that ‘those’ people are less important, have less value than we do, therefore they should be our slaves, our lackeys, the focus of our anger and revenge? How is it possible that this fucked-up way of thinking and acting could be led by those ‘good christian folk’ who deny the essence and basics of Jesus’ teachings? It is a mystery to many of us who cannot comprehend this type of Idol Worship, this way of desecrating God’s Name. Yet, we are in such a state and without divine intervention through We the People this could be the death knell of truth, kindness, justice, mercy, and walking in the ways of God!

How is it possible? We are in the state we are in because We the People fell asleep, because instead of heeding the words of Rabbi Heschel, we allowed, helped to make a few generations of religious idiots, we are guilty of dumbing religion down so much that it became totally irrelevant to the everyday lives of most people except for the fanatics and the truly religious people-not the same person of course. Rather than see the importance of humanity, some ‘religious folk’ have created a hierarchy of human beings, be it the deplorable comment of Hillary Clinton, the terrible rhetoric of Trump(even in his Easter message), the demeaning of people by Mitt Romney, the hatred of Bannon, Miller, Rogan, et al towards anyone who is ‘not with us’ and, of course, we can’t leave out the ‘religious leadership’ who call for the deportations of people without due process, the formal naming of America as a ‘christian nation’, the support of marches like the one in Charlottesville where “Jews will not replace us” was chanted loudly and proudly. All of this and more is possible in a country founded as a refuge, a place to flee to, by those experiencing religious persecution, those unable to move up in the society they were living in, by those who believed every human was entitled to “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” when the foundational story is changed to make the Confederacy the martyrs, when the foundational story is to glorify the worst behavior, slavery, and yearn for ‘those good old days’. All of these terrible things are possible when religion is overtaken by idolators, charlatans, grifters and autocratic sociopaths, as we are experiencing today. One has to give the current ‘religious’ fakers credit as they have been at their destruction of the values of Christ, Moses, Buddha, et al, since the 1950’s and their efforts have borne fruit because the rest of us, the rest of the religious leadership allowed for pap to be given to our children and the dumbing down of religious ideas, of the tenets of faith to adults so people are not really interested in what the Bible has to say, what Judaism can teach us about living life in freedom, in obligation, in gratitude, in paying it forward, in vibrancy.

It is time, actually past time, for We the People to demand truth from our religious leadership, to take up the mantle they have abandoned and desecrated, the mantle of honoring ourselves and every other human being as being “created in the Image of the divine”, endowed with a higher consciousness and an intuitive mind, both gifts that are to be used for the betterment of everyone, not just the ‘privileged few’. We the People must inflate ourselves with the dignity and value we are born with, we must fill ourselves up the knowledge we are all created equal. We are being called by the words above, by our Bible to honor the uniqueness of each individual knowing that ‘sameness’ is not going to fix our broken world, rejoicing in the skills and talents of the people around us to care for their corner of the garden that is this world, while we tend to our unique plot in the garden we have been entrusted with. We the People have to say NO to Paula Cain-White and her bullshit ‘office of faith’, her constant ‘praying to Jesus’ for Trump to continue his uprooting of fundamental freedoms. We the People are being called to demand of the Congress they do their FUCKING JOB and stop living in fear of Trump and losing an election. It is time for We the People to get out the vote, to demonstrate even more, to make Tesla a bigger loser and stop the tariffs that are killing our economy, We the People have to demand a restoration of the importance of human existence with our actions, not our whining!

As one who deflated and trivialized my own life, the first sentence above overtook me in a way I was not prepared for. I have worked the past 38+years to pump up my spiritual life, to be a serious motherfucker when it comes to living life well. I know the pitfalls of my way of being, I know the ostracization associated with not going along since my youth. I have always voiced my opposition to the way things are supposed to go and the rejection of my words and knowing is what led me to give up and this is the path of deflation and trivialization that I have fought against in my recovery. I will not give up, I will continue to fight for what is holy and what is right, I will continue to fight for the dignity of every human being be it with the person themselves and/or another. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark

Trivialization of existence or "acts of worship" that give meaning and purpose to life? Year 4 Day 107

Daily Life Lessons from Rabbi Heschel

Year 4 Day 107

“Acts of worship counteract the trivialization of existence. Both involve the person, and give him a sense of living in ultimate relationships. Both of them are ways of teaching man how to stand alone and not be alone, of teaching man that God is a refuge, not a security.” (Insecurity of Freedom pg.20)

Reading and re-reading these words can give one a wonderfully painful look at one’s mode of living! Some of the “acts of worship” were delineated in the past two days and involve integrity, moral dedications, intellectual pursuits, etc. These are the “acts of worship that counteract the trivialization of existence”. Rabbi Heschel’s use of the word “both” takes me a minute to understand, I am not sure I do and here is my best effort. “Both” “acts of worship” and “trivialization of existence” “involve the person”. The question is how does “trivialization of existence help a human being to have “a sense of living in ultimate relationships” and “how to stand alone and not be alone”?

When we recognize our trivializing of our life through meaningless pursuits of gold and greed, of fame and power, of self-deception and the deception of another, we come to realize there is something bigger than ourselves, there is more to life than pleasure. This, of course, is the great issue of our time and every era: helping We the People get out of our narrow thinking; our confined spaces of me, me, me; our personal Egypts and out from under the ‘new Pharaoh’ who imposes harsh labor upon us. “Trivialization of existence” is what is happening right now in Washington D.C. and across our country, it is happening in Russia, in El Salvador, in Hungary, in Turkey, in many countries in the Arab world and, unfortunately, in Israel also. The stupid pursuit of fame and fortune by the current administration belies the “oath of office” Trump and Vance took, belies the “oath of office” the Senate and House members took, belies the “oath of office” the Federal Courts took! And these bullshit artists, and they are artists, have convinced enough of a plurality to continue to govern and rape the very people who elected them, whom they consider suckers, losers, and ‘marks’. These bullshit artists, unfortunately, include many ‘people of the cloth’. Clergy who have decided to sell their souls for a few trinkets much like the Indians did with Manhattan. Clergy who have rejected the path set forth by people of faith like Mother Theresa, Rev. King, Thomas Merton, Rabbi Heschel, Pope Frances, etc and seek to enrich themselves and empower themselves with lies, with fake holy water, and trample on the very “acts of worship” that Moses, Jesus, Mohammed, Buddha laid out for them and for us.

What is learned by the “trivialization of existence” by people who engage in “acts of worship” is how much better life is when one knows the joy, pain, uplift and exhilaration of “living in ultimate relationships” both with the Ineffable One and with one’s partner, with one’s Chaverim, one’s spiritual friends. What is learned by those of us who believe in living with moral dedication, integrity, etc is that we can stand on our own two feet because, as the “Footprints” poem says: “the time you saw only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you”. Our “acts of worship” have taught us that we know “how to stand alone and not be alone” because we are always near to our core spiritual self and to the spiritual force in the Universe. We know we are in a relationship that goes beyond words and is inexplicable. Instead of buying the subterfuge of the grifters and deceivers, we know that inexplicable does not mean not real, doesn’t mean fantasy, airy fairy. This is the lie these bullshit artists are trying to peddle so they can have the power using empty “acts of worship” to confuse us. The saddest reality is that so many people don’t know this. They are being fed lies and deceptions, subterfuges and mendacities for breakfast, lunch, and dinner so they can no longer tell the difference between truth and lies.

The last phrase above is truly mind-blowing to me: “security” comes from the Latin meaning “free from care” and “refuge” comes from the Latin meaning “flee back”. Being connected to God is not “free from cares and troubles” as some charlatans promote. Rather connected to God is a “refuge”, a place to “flee back” to every time we are lost, every time we mistakenly think we are alone, every time we need Good Orderly Direction, every time we think we are alone like Jacob thought when he had both of his dreams. When “acts of worship” is the blueprint of living we follow, when we know that we are in “ultimate relationship” with one another and with God, when we accept the truth of our need for one another in order to be more connected to the Ineffable One, we are deeply entrenched in living a life of purpose and meaning rather than a life exemplifying the “trivialization of existence”. It is up to We the People to take back our country, to take back our religious traditions and return them both to being on the path that our ideals and goals have set for us. It is time for We the People to demand of ourselves and one another, of the current administration and the current Congress that we are once again that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth”. We are still fighting the Civil War, it is not about North and South, it is about decency and freedom vs. power and autocracy. It is about living into and being changed by our “acts of worship” that Jesus actually called for, that Moses actually said, and no longer allow the grifters, the liars, the idolators who promote lies in the names of Jesus, Moses, and Mohammed to have power and rule. This is the call of the moment for We the People, will you answer it?

Sitting here since 2:30 this morning, reading and re-reading these words, listening to the lies of Netanyahu, Trump and the rest of their ilk, remind me of the myriad of times the “trivialization of existence” was my life. As Malcolm X says: “an examined life is painful”. Yet, because I must, can and do live an “examined life” as Socrates promoted, I can do my T’Shuvah, I can change, repair, repent and, most of all, “flee back” to the embrace of the Ineffable One. I find “refuge” in my spiritual practice, it helps me deal with life in new and profoundly different ways than I did when “trivialization” was the modality I followed. Caring, compassion, truth, justice, integrity, intellectual pursuits, love, all pay greater dividends than “trivialization” ever did. I was a ‘snake oil salesman’ for a while and I am here to preach the Gospel of Truth, the Gospel of “acts of worship”, the Gospel of spiritual counseling to find our true self and live an authentic life. Mine has not always been pretty nor ‘politically correct’, and I have not compromised my values, my truth, my voice no matter what the cost-and it has, at times, been heavy. I know I don’t “stand alone” and this is what brings me comfort and strength every day to keep on keeping on. God Bless and stay safe, Rabbi Mark
